I hate her so much I skip pages with her on it.

Ever since her debut in Greater than the Sum, T'Ryssa Chen has grated on my nerves far beyond what a Neelix-Wesley-Okana Devil Spawn ever could.

Her "hey i'm wacky and hip, and will say the darndest things" through her debut novel, to her idiot naked prancing, beer drinking, Konya humping post-Destiny antics, to all of a sudden she's a competent bridge officer capable of standing down Bateson and the Gorn in orbit of Orion. I honestly think its a conspiracy. Bennett, Mack, Ward, Leisner and Swallow all working together to see how much they can aggravate me until I throw my kindle at the wall.

Then Dayton provided an analogy in a recent episode of Literary Trek's that solidified it for me. He compared her to Abby Sciuto on NCIS. Another character I loathe. So both Television and Books have now merged into one personification of a character of someone I wish would die. And not some Spock like heroic death.

Give her the Rot that the Selevians get.

Please Una, I love you. Jeff Lang if you see this, you are great.

Please in your 2014 novels, if you don't murder her just place her on vacation throughout your books.

Do you like everyone you know? I don't. It's okay that you don't like her - perfectly valid. Consider, if you will, the possibility that instead of a badly written character that you are supposed to like, she is a well-written character that you are meant to hate. :techman:

A lot of people like T'Ryssa a lot. Personally, I think that anything that elicits strong positive reactions in some people will elicit strong negative reactions in others, and the only way to offend no one is to delight no one. I'm just glad Trys makes a strong impression.

I love Trys and I love Abby on NCIS too, so I guess that kind of character just appeals to me.

I said it in another thread recently... Chen is the only Lit character on the E-E who has an actual personality of her own. Love it or hate it, at least it's something different.

I like her, but much like Abby, I can easily see how she would irritate some people, too.

Trys is my favorite Treklit character who is not my namesake or maaaaaybe Prynn Tenmei. But Prynn hasn't done anything in like ten years save one moment in The Fall, so.

Abby's one of the best parts of watching NCIS, and Pauley Perrette is great in the part. I love the Abby/Gibbs dynamic in the show

I do like her, she's a different personality than what we've seen in a while & it's refreshing.

I get it. I really do! I totally understand how someone can get a hate-on for Trys.

I, however, am not one of those people. I'll be the president of the T'Ryssa Chen fan club if you'll let me. I totally love the mentor/protege relationship she and Picard have. I think she's a breath of fresh air into a series that I already enjoy. And I even enjoy the fact that she elicits such strong feelings in others!

She's a refreshing change of pace, a welcome addition to the sometimes overly serious 24th century cast of characters.

When I saw the title of the thread, I expected that Chen would be the subject.

I like her, but I can see how others don't. A friend and fellow Treklit leader quite dislikes her for her erratic behaviour etc. I like her trajectory and potential.

I've got no problems with Chen. Same with the rest of the new novel-specific Enterprise crew.

I just love how people who hate things tend to need to announce it to the world where as people who like or just indifferent don't tend to. It's almost like they need to validate there feelings and make sure others feel the same.

Just for the record, I like Chen, she has a personality set that I as a younger man was drawn to.

I think it was a mistake to tone Chen down, She's the only new character with a distinct personality on the E-E. They killed off the others (Choudury, Leybenzon). The current ones, Smrhova, Faur, Elfiki, Konya even Taurik have little to set them apart from the crowd. I would have loved to have seen more of that female Klingon conn officer lonemagpie introduced in Indistinguishable from Magic (Kat?) or a character ported over from New Frontier. I could read a whole novel about just a session for captain Picard with Hugh Cambridge.

Well, it was always my intent that she would be "toned down" somewhat from where she started -- that she'd begin as an unruly and unfocused junior officer who hadn't yet learned the discipline to develop her full potential, and that Captain Picard's mentoring would teach her that discipline and put her on the right path. Although she'd still retain her spontaneity and wit and lighten him up a little in return.

My response to the OP is "okay, just skip the pages as your actions don't have any impact on me at all and sharing your feelings in such a manner does not really make for conversation."

Agreed. I love that Trys's name is very similar to my sn, great coincidence that.
