I know that in TV shows we often see children grow at ridiculous rates due to the availability of actors and whatnot. But I always entrusted BSG with a better level of realism.

Given how much time has passed since her birth, doesn't she seem like the largest baby ever? Every scene she's in puts me off a bit just because she's so huge.

I mean, I'm pretty sure the average 5-year old is about her size. She's what? 2? 3 tops.

She's likely 5 or so, playing 3. If you listened to Helo and Athena ranting at the deck hand when the Chief asked "what's going on?" before being told Boomer took Hera, they each say at different times, "3 year old" so...

Yes, it's not exactly perfect realism.

But I imagine it's quite difficult to find, let alone work with, a true 3 year old.

At 1 and under, they don't do much, so the right kid can be worked with. By 4 or 5, they have some self control and can be worked with. My nephew is nearly 3 right now, so I can imagine how difficult it could be to work with someone his age, lol.

Not to mention the added issue of finding a child actress of mixed ethnicity to play the child in question.

All in all, I think they've done a good job.

I can buy her as a 3-year-old... a very well-fed 3-year-old. She's about the same height as my 4-year-old, but my kid's a toothpick.

    Cylons grow faster? lol

Honestly, this sounds terrible, but Hera stopped being my primary concern a long time ago. Unless she's the Cylon God reincarnate, Gavin can have her.

Oh no... Hera is a the Cylon God reincarnate!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

never really thought about it; I assumed they photographed her more in close up which may explain why she looks bigger...

Yeah, Hera is supposed to be 3, but the girl playing here is clearly at least 4 or 5. Heck, the imagined Boomer/Chief kid (going by the growth chart on the wall) was supposed to be 6 or 7, but they had what looked like a 9 or 10 year old playing here, too.

I guess that's just how TV is. If the character is X years old, the actor is almost always going to be X + Y years old.

Well, at least they're not on The CW, where the actress that plays Hera would be 37.
And at least it's not a soap, where they'd send her off to the school ship for a month and she'd come back a fully grown professional race-car driver with a long and illustrious career.

0: She was born late in season two, maybe at the outside three months shy of the founding of New Caprica.

    +3 months: New Caprica settled.

+15 months: New Caprica abandoned when Cylons arrive

+19 months: The Battle of New Caprica

+37 months: Ellen escapes from John with Boomer's help.

So yeah, about 3 years old.

My son is not yet 3 yrs old and is 40 inches tall and 42 US pounds so Hera's size is not unbelievable.

And he is the Captain of the Battlestar Love Boat!

Hera"s size/age doesn't bother me. I just wish she looked a little more Asian.

She looks more half black/half white. Or half anything-but-Asian/half white.

The Asian parts means she should be even SMALLER!

And yeah yeah, I've been around the block enough times to know that hybrid children grow faster than pure children, or at least that's what we tell ourselves to justify how gigantic Alexander and Naomi Wildman got so fast.
