Meh anthropomorphic animals have never done a whole lot for me, and the depictions of humanized furry creatures creep me out a smidge (especially the sexually suggestive images) but to each his own and all that.

To quote Saint James (or Saint Phil depending on your favorite), "Am I evil? Yes I am."

Pfft. What about those "good relations with the Wookies" you supposedly have? ;)

Okay, as for how I feel about furries: I don't really get the appeal myself. I mean, hey, if you enjoy drawing and looking at pictures of anthropomorphicized animals, fine. We all have our interests, and to each his own. I've enjoyed a number of cartoons with anthropomorphic animal characters, but I don't have any particular fascination with them.

When people start sexualizing these images, and getting off to them, however, that's when my reaction is a bit more :wtf:. Honestly, I have a hard time wrapping my head around that one. I've always said "different strokes for different folks", but I really don't see how anyone could get sexually aroused from cartoon animals. It just seems bizarre to me.

Wonder if there's something of the Uncanny Valley effect at work here. I've been thinking about this since seeing the thread because while I have no moral objection I do find pictures of foxes thrusting their hips and winking at me slightly unsettling; not "DO NOT WANT", but certainly "would rather not". It's the only reason I've been able to come up with that hasn't seemed full of holes and also accounts for the fact that I find some of the non-sexual pictures unsettling as well. Don't know whether that works for anyone else but if feels right to me, for whatever that's worth.

As far as this part goes, Rule 34 dude. It applies to everything. Don't try to understand it. Just let yourself go. It's easier that way.

Possibly--I know the "uncanny valley" effect kicks in for me with fursuits. Drawn furries at any level of realism? Awesome. People in funky detailed animal costumes? A little freaky. But that's just me.

I can understand that. I never got the appeal for Japanese anime characters that looked like very young girls with large breasts and drawn in sexual positions. I just figure it's in the eye of the beholder. I have always been a fan of anthropomorphism, whether it be plants, animals, or something else in nature. The idea of a sentient intelligence beyond what we can understand but also having those attributes that we also have, it just appeals to me.

I get what you're saying. If you'll notice, though, most of the sexual arousal comes from the human traits given to these animals. For the most part, aside from sentience, secondary sex characteristics exist as well. In many cases, the animal's physiology is also changed to match that of appealing human curves. In other words, more likely, it's a human with fur. Many furries are drawn with Japanese style animation, you know the kind: big eyes, exaggerated features, yet with an appeal that denotes humanity.

It may be the idea of animals having human intelligence, or it could be the notion of animals having comparable sex drives and human secondary traits. I'm not sure. I do get what you're saying about the "uncanny valley". I find that most evident in computer animation, when the realism is so real, your mind is uncertain how to approach the information it is receiving on a subconscious level.

I love fursuiters. I'd love to wear one and go to a convention. I have never done it, but just to try it once would be pretty cool.

We should join forces and go to a con. Seriously. I mean, why the fuck not? It's something I've been meaning to do, but haven't bothered yet.

Agreed. That would be fun as hell.
I could practice up on my drawing skills, make a whole bunch of sketches and make a mint while we were there!

Ah, I'd never be able to make that. I live further west. Plus, monetarily, this would be a bad time to go to a convention. I'd probably plan for a year in advance and then make sure I could swing it.

Which is not unreasonable. Too bad I have the money to (in theory) pull off a con now, but what my financial situation in a year's time will be is up in the air. (How "further west" do you live?)

By the way, I like how we're the only two keeping this topic alive.

We're probably the two most well known furries here, so that's why.

Although I think TrekBBS found out there are more furries here than previously thought! :D

It should be taken as a rule that there is always more of everything on TrekBBS than previously thought!

That's a good rule to keep in mind.

I'm actually going to a con next month, Midwest Furfest. Only making it a day thing though, its close enough that I can drive there and back no problem. No fursuit for me though. Just got some ears, paws, and a tail. My friend on the other hand has a partial suit shes gonna debut at Furfest. So excited!

Yeah. I would like to own a pair of ears and a tail should I ever go to a con. I wouldn't want to be the odd one out, er, as it were. :D
