But as you just conceded, superhero stories don't have to be about just stunts and effects. You're saying that that's a problem resulting from drift, not an inevitable and standard state for any story about a person in a superhero costume. Heller's comments suggests to me that he doesn't see that distinction -- that, like so many people out there, he only sees the stereotype and the negative caricature of what superhero fiction is and is unfairly using the bad examples to tar the entire genre.

Absolutely right. Not to mention that the executives running FOX now are totally different people from the ones who ran it when Firefly was on. It makes no sense to blame one set of people for their predecessors' decisions just because they work for the same company.

Sure, FOX did treat Almost Human similarly to Firefly in that it showed the episodes out of order, but that's two examples out of dozens and dozens. FOX has put more SF/fantasy shows on the air than just about any other TV network. Clearly it's willing to give genre shows a chance. But most shows of any type get cancelled young. That's just the nature of the industry.

Maybe, but honestly I never much cared for his version of Bruce, and his version of Batman was pretty awful. I really found him the weak link in the Nolan movies' cast. Well, Katie Holmes was the weak link in the first, but Bale never really impressed me overall, not in that particular role, at least.

Perhaps Heller's grading on a curve, in the sense that a terrific performance from a 12- or 13-year-old actor is more impressive than a terrific performance from a veteran actor in his 30s.

Although it's certainly true that the producers of any show are going to say things like "This is the best cast I've ever worked with" or "Our actors are the best ever," because of course they want to get people to watch the show.

Okay, so Gordon and Bullock are the center of attention, Alfred and Bruce are second-most prominent but off to the side (with Selina up above them), then Fish Mooney and Cobblepot are third-largest, and Nygma and Ivy are in the background on the villains' side. Suggests a few things about the show's emphasis. And there's a black cat in the background below Selina, and a penguin poster above Cobblepot. No sign of any bats, though there's a searchlight in the background.

Vine growths on the building behind Ivy, who is also holding a rose, casino cards/marquee at the top of the buildings over Ivy/Nygma. The card showing is a face-card Joker. Question Mark on the wall behind Wayne/Alfred (another allusion to The Riddler.) There seems to be "something" in behind the grated window to Alfred/Bruce's left. It's face looking but studying it in largest view I can't make out what it is supposed to be.

They should have let Donal Logue wear a hat like that when he was on SVU. :techman:

Bale is a phenomenal performer. Without a doubt my favorite actor. He's incredibly versatile.

Anyone recognize the graffiti just to the left of Cobblepot's shoulder?

Too dark, can't see a frakking thing.

You say Graffiti, and I think Anarky, but his dad, the Joker, is probably 8 like little Brucie.

You mean the not-so-subtle penguin-shaped design? Or am I missing something?

    Abin Sur?

The thing about Scott Free is that he is immortal and probably millions of years old, so even tis far back he's going to look almost 30.

Ivy's colour scheme actually reminds me of the Frank Gorshin Riddler, so it's appropriate that she's beside Nygma. Overall, a very cool image.

"Rako" in actual graffiti behind Cobblepot.

    A very, very obscure reference.

Person in the window could be Harvey as the right side of his face looks scarred...or at least is in shadow.

Cory Michael Stewart, Victoria Cartagena, and Andrew Stewart-Jones have been upped to regular cast members in the show, having initially been set as guest stars in the pilot. They play Edward Nygma, Renee Montoya, and Crispus Allen respectively.

Montoya and Allen as regulars? This may be somewhat similar to Gotham Central after all. (Except that was a series about how the Gotham PD operated in a world where Batman, his allies, and his enemies were already active.)
