I guess what I'm thinking of is a car chase with five different cars driven by five different heroes... how hard would it be to cut out one of the cars?

^ Probably very complicated. As the second-biggest character, you can bet his car is a major part of most action scenes, making flat-out erasing it impossible, and if you tried to digitally insert another team member in his place, you'd have to then fix wherever said member was originally in the sequence - not to mention the awkwardness of Brian's car suddenly being driven by the wrong person for no apparent reason, something the audience for these movies is likely to pick up on. Then you probably have to reshoot the dialogue scenes on either side of the sequence.

Also remember that Brian brought in at least half the team. Roman (Tyrese) and Tej (Ludacris) are there because of him, and Mia is now more defined as his wife and child's mother than she is Dom's sister. So, counting him, that's four team members tied primarily to him; with Vince and Gisele and Han gone, the only one Dom really brings to the group is Letty, and that barbecueing jokester duo not seen since Five. So if the studio can indeed recoup the production costs and start from scratch, it's not at all hard to see why they'd be tempted to do so.

Production is now officially shut down until they know how to proceed.

Universal put up a Paul Walker tribute video, but it only uses Fast and Furious movies and comes across more like a commercial.

Just finished watching the first one on DVD. It still holds up.... sorta. I may have to pick up the others as they were movies I enjoyed but just never really collected.

I can see a total rewrite along the lines of 'using everything of Paul we have in the can, what film can we make ?'.

The general direction of the film will remain the same, but the route may change somewhat...

If they're going to start completely over, maybe the best thing would be to write a direct sequel to the film they were originally going to make and use the first script as background.

That way they can use any footage of Walker/Brian they have as flashback.

    That could work really well.

What if you use the action scenes he filmed, and then at the point where the footage runs out... Dom gets a phone call, has a one sided conversation, then tells the group that Brian is going back to take care of his wife and child and wishes them the best of luck.

They will probably kill off his character. Send him out in style - 'I'm off home now, bye' seems a rather underwhelming send off...

Isn't it in poor taste to kill him in the movie, though? Isn't it better to retire the character in a happy family life?

I dunno, killing him off in the movie would give the characters an on-screen chance to "send him off." Just as long as he doesn't die in the movie by car-crash.

No offense, but that is literally a worse idea than swapping in a muppet of Brian for his unfilmed scenes.

Really, they should just use what they have as much as possible in a re-planned sequel and have Brian killed off somewhere in the story. Depending on what they have filmed it might be possible to "have their cake and eat it to", so to speak. Yeah, it might mean re-writing the movie and having to re-film a large portion of it to make the scenes fit. And it might mean at the very least having a body double for distance or in-car shots but it's possible to still have the Stathem story and just make Brian's death part of everything that happens.

Again, I'd argue it'd be "best" to make Brian die in something other than a car crash (which obviously would be tasteless considering how the actor really died) but I think it'd be pretty bad to make the last movie he filmed not ever see the light of day.

Which is why I really like Gaith's idea. I said I didn't want a revenge film. And I really don't. People mentioned that it already was going to be with Han, but that's different in just about every way. And I think most of us agree that jus having Brian ride off into the sunset off-screen would just be stupid.

Admittedly, re-castings aren't ideal, but this one would exist so much beyond the fourth wall that I doubt anyone would really care, and anyone who did object would just look like a buffoon.

This would allow for them to use all the footage they do have of Walker. And I bet they could land anyone they wanted for the role.

Movies aren't shot in chronology. Without knowing what's in the can and what remains to be shot, it's impossible to know if there's even enough footage of Walker's character for it to be coherent with him.

Gaith's idea is probably too crazy for a major tentpole franchise, but this series is already pretty silly, so who knows?

Breaking the fourth wall or whatever by recasting is beyond the scope of the movie world's rules. It would be like including puppets or using wooden go-carts and pretending they're real cars.
