Fascinating articles about Matt Jefferies designs and the Golden Ratio.

Yes, the idea of the golden ratio in visual design is questionable.

Please don't just post links to stories. We can all get that ourselves. If it's interesting enough to post, put some discussion into it. What is so interesting? Do you agree? Disagree?

If there's no real discussion here I will close it. I'll give it a little time, just in case.

I will make a stab at discussion!

Even if MJ didn't actually latch onto the Golden Proportion or the sacred geometry of circles as the articles claim, the two designs do seem to fall nicely in line with the premise.

I got to thinking about this and thought it might be an interesting exercise in designing sci-fi ships for alien cultures. Building a circular grid out of nice overlapping circles and drawing the lines based on the points of intersection could result in a number of odd, but interestingly balanced designs. Imagine if we used this philosophy to design a range of Klingon ships? Or what if we came up with another odd grid based on a different number of circles or even another kind of geometry altogether and used that as the framework of design for an entire culture's ships? I think you could make a pretty interesting design family with this philosophy. It might be a fun thing to explore further.
