There's a publicity spot from TVH where the cast was interviewed on the "new" bridge where you can see how much was finished on the port side -- almost to the viewscreen it seemed. I thought maybe it was Good Morning America but it was another similar show.

Are you sure that wasn't Final Frontier? I remember everyone on that bridge set with a similar kind of interview setting as a publicity thing set up by Shatner and Bennett. They were all in full costume and many of them looked very uncomfortable to be there - particularly Koenig and Doohan.

Edit: yep, dear Christ it was horrible

Wow -- Thanks for the lesson! I never noticed those bulbs there in TMP. Since we never see straight into one of those holes, it makes me think that the receptacles were always there but they unscrewed the bulbs for some scenes. Here is a theory: It is documented that there were challenges getting light into the set for TMP, and special lighting rigs had to be constructed to get light in. I wonder if they used those greebly lights portions of the set that were just out of camera to provide some illumination? I know almost nothing about studio lighting, so someone more knowledgeable than me might be able to say if that were likely.

Another possibility is they tried it out, but decided they weren't needed.

Also never noticed just how segmented they are -- almost looks as if those greeblies can pull out without too much trouble. Its one of those interesting details that stuck out to me in the first four trek films ever. Used to think they were air vents like the ones above your seat in an airplane.

Sorry to hijack the thread -- back to the topic of those amazing renders of the awesome bridge!

I love this! I feel like I'm standing next to Kirk and McCoy when they step off the turbolift. All that's missing is chairs and people.

Ya'know, I think I can live with that. Of course, TOS did also feature real pipes and doodads as well as the "shrink-wrap" cover plates so the focus wasn't on them exclusively. But anti-dust cover or not, it still seems really dangerous to have machinery exposed on the Transporter Room floor like that!

And: There's no such thing as over-thinking things in this forum! ;)

Time to enlist you guys for some help. I keep seeing this image in TWOK stills, and was wondering if any of you know what it is. It appears to be some kind of clipboard or data sheet.

In the crew members arms in the bottom left corner:

In this image, it is to the far left coming out of what looks like a computer terminal:

Inverted black and white, middle frame, on the back wall of McCoy's office:

In the arms of one of Khan's henchmen

Any idea? It looks so familiar, like I've seen it somewhere, but can't place it.

Did some quick tests tonight just to see what things would look like under "red alert" conditions. I had originally put it off in my mind as something that would be pretty tough; setting up a whole new lighting scheme. But turns out, all I had to do was change all the lights in my existing setup to "red" instead of pure "white", and things looks pretty accurate already. No extra work needed, really. Check it out:

You are a real haystack-needle finder! :techman:

Unless I'm mistaken, it's the same kind of GNDN pad that also showed up in TNG like the one in Picard's battle bridge ready room: http://tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x01/farpoint_hd_411.jpg

(Wow, just noticed more SONEXclassic acoustic foam panels used for the TNG production. :D)

Thanks, Bob. That looks like the same type of panel, just modified and colored. So it's probably safe to say it's floating around early TNG episodes as well.

I noticed it in TMP as well while gathering some helm reference shots tonight, but nothing up-close. If anyone knows exactly what this image is or has a better up-close view of it, please let me know.

That data-slate thing looks like one of those "electronic clipboards" that was made for Phase II/ TMP. I have a feeling it is featured in either "The Art of Star Trek" or else "Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series" (opened up with Xmas light wires on show). I'll have to check after work though.

My good friend Basill found a host of instances where the clipboard is featured, and his findings point to this image from TSFS as the most detailed one we've found yet.

No way are Picard's GNDN PADDs the same as the ones on TWOK, they are way too thin! The picture I was thinking of was actually in "Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series" but not as helpful as I thought, since it only shows the interior workings:

However, we do get an idea of the thickness of the tablet.

I'm not so sure that then tablet pictured in the Phase II book is the same one we are researching. I can see the faint outline of a Starfleet Delta symbol, which leads me to believe it's one of these: http://www.racprops.com/issue6/STMP/images/CompClipBoard-01.jpg

They were all varied in color and design, featured in TMP, and later turned up on the walls of the Photon Torpedo Bay and Sickbay in TWOK.

The one in question is much thinner.

Yes, that is very likely one of these.

Which is also likely one of either of these larger (thicker) boards. Or at least in the same "prop family."

I have one or two more images in my stash at home (probably posted by someone that managed to snag one of those from the auctions) that have a really nice front view where you can really see the Starfleet emblem in full relief. I'll try and get that up in a few hours. :)

Still, the main one in question (which is also in the above screen shot) is little more than a piece of frosted or translucent-white acrylic sheet-plastic, marked with dark stencils or etchings on the front face. There were at least a few copies of them and more than one pattern (though most appear to be the same). They permeated the movie era and they were treated as if they were functionally electronic equipment in many scenes. It doesn't blink, but its simplicity is a thing of beauty. ;)

That's a match, without a doubt! The size of the hand and the arrangement of the lights are a much better fit. Thanks for finally letting me see the other side of that picture, Donny! :)

The markings on that clipboard are incredibly Franz Joseph.
