I would have done the exact same thing without thinking twice about it if I were in the same situation.

Just calling it as I see it! If anyone's really interested in the source, I'll get it.

It looks stupid, like nobody ever taught him the proper way to sit (and stand, and walk, and hold his head up straight, etc.).

I had a high school math teacher who walked around with his head at the same kind of weird angle Riker uses. It drove me nuts to look at him.

How do you define 'the proper way to sit (and stand, and walk, and hold his head up straight, etc.).' ? Expect an angry message from Stephen Hawking in the morning!

Stephen Hawking is physically disabled. Jonathan Frakes is not.

The only thing I've noticed about Riker is that he seems to be the most common character to appear in avatars here.

I interpreted Riker's chair-mounting move to be his way of showing that he could act like a big kid, in order to put people at ease, at least about things that don't matter such as how you sit down or how someone else does.

Goofy, maybe, but perhaps serving to help make those around him less self-conscious about their own individual idiosyncrasies.

I may have missed it, but I don't recall him doing any such thing at a formal function.

"Timescape" when Picard is doing an impression of the speaker of the lecture he attended.

I'm told that the technical term for how Riker sits down is "Sitfucking."

As for the whole foot on Data's console posture, Riker did it most often but both Picard and Data were seen doing it as well. In either case, it earned Riker the nickname "Stinknuts" here on this very BBS a few years ago. I made this thread bomb back then.

I feel like it was meant to show he was a "physical," athletic type guy. And a little bit of "just because I can" swagger. I was a kid when Next Generation first came on, and I remember doing it in school with... mixed results.

Did you ever see Frakes sit like that on "normal size" chairs?

Since I don't think anyone's said it yet...if Stewart's habit of tugging on his Starfleet tunic was dubbed "The Picard Maneuver", then surely Frakes's sitting style must be called "The Riker Maneuver".

And FWIW, this thread gave me the impetus to actually try this for the first time ever in my office chair today. Considering I'm a guy in his mid-40s of medium height, it went surprisingly well...but I wouldn't want to push my luck by doing it regularly....

Or, you could keep practicing until you get perfect at it maybe? You'll be the life and soul at this year's office christmas party! ;)

Riker and Deanna's relationship suffered because he was focused on career.

Or, put another way, Riker neglected Deanna because what he really wanted was the -D.
