The cover art with Archer is Okay I thought some other Enterprise characters might appear on the cover. I expected to see the Federation banner on the cover. The story is what I'm interested in reading. The story is what I've been wanting find out what happens next to the Enterprise characters since Romulan war has ended.

Remember folks, don't judge a book by its cover.

Kind of a bland cover, but not unexpected given recent trends. I figured they'd probably put a shot of Bakula up there, though I was kind of hoping that they'd have taken the time to Photoshop a new Starfleet uniform onto him instead. I'm curious to see the design Christopher came up with.

Ah, never mind then. As the author you would know better than I would.
I just thought something that represented the whole Federation, rather than just Earth could be more appropriate.

Ooh, I love that blurb. I'm even more excited for this now than I was before. I guess that's what a good blurb is meant to do!

:techman:Great Synopsis this is the type of story I've wanted to see for the Enterprise crew.I'm glad T'Pol is still in Starfleet and that she and Malcolm are Captains of their own ships.Sounds like a terrific story.I can't wait to finally get to read this book and find out what happened to the rest of the Enterprise crew .Space Exploration being explored in this novel is nice to see again. Now that Archer is an Admiral it will be nice to see how he handles not being command of a ship anymore and dealing with diplomats and the founding of the federation and this alien threat.

Sounds exciting! I'm ridiculously pleased to see that Reed has become a captain. I hope we'll also get updates on Phlox, Hoshi and Mayweather, too. And it'll be interesting to see how Trip fits into the story, if at all.

T'Pol being a captain is also a new development, don't forget.

    All these will be addressed.

Story sounds great and I hope it is the beginning of a new series. The promotions are cool news, indeed. Looking forward to reading this during the summer.

A question concerning the ranks. Shouldn't Archer be a Commodore? We know from First Flight that rank is used in the 22nd century. Also, as I recall Reed's rank was Lt. Commander in the last Romulan War book, and now he's a Captain? Or is his actual rank still Lt. Commander (or possibly full Commander) but he's called Captain Reed because he now commands a ship?

Yeah, I know I should wait until the book comes out and these will likely be explained.

According to Christopher, it is the beginning of a new storyline continuing after the Romulan War. Book 2 has already been announced :techman:

Keep in mind that the last time we definitely see Archer as a captain in the novels is in November 2160, a few months after the war ends. In the chapter of To Brave the Storm that depicts the Federation's founding ceremony, Archer's rank is not mentioned, nor is anybody else's. (TATV doesn't count since the books have treated it as a historically inaccurate reconstruction.) RotF:ACoF begins in September 2162, nearly two years after Archer was last referred to as a captain. So there's been time for these characters to go through more than one change in rank.

This was intentional. I didn't want to pick up exactly where the previous book left off. I wanted there to be enough of a break between The Romulan War and Rise of the Federation that I could make a fresh start, that this would clearly be the beginning of a new era. So there's been time for a fair amount of change in the characters' lives since the last time you saw them -- not unlike the transition from TOS/TAS to TMP, or from TMP to TWOK. When you pick up this book, you'll find that most of the characters are in new positions -- sometimes just the same job on a different ship, sometimes a more significant change.

This synopsis sounds great... really looking forward to this one!

I was actually a bit put off that Reed somehow managed to get to Captain already, but when you put it like this, I guess I'm good with it. TBH, I had completely forgotten the lieutenant commander reference from To Brave the Storm that The Wormhole mentioned... I thought last we had seen him, he was still a lieutenant. (I was also under the seemingly incorrect impression that United Earth Starfleet didn't have a lieutenant commander rank...)
