No, the first couple of times Bates was suggested in this thread, Keith said she wouldn't have been his first choice, but she could do the role justice. So he definitely didn't have her in mind. Keith has also said earlier in this thread that the physical and verbal template, and namesake, for Nan Bacco was his great-grandmother.

There's not a single thing about Bacco that I would ever associate with Kathy Bates...

I think Kathy Bates has a lot of the same kind of sass, the same kind of down-to-Earth vibe, the same kind of assertiveness, that I think of Bacco as having.

I never said any such thing ever in my entire life ever. I never even thought about such a thing. Trust me, on the list of Things I Was Thinking About While Developing Nan Bacco, elder Janeway wouldn't crack the Top 10,000 of that list.

You are mistaken, as Christopher said, though I think Bates could do the role. So could Helen Mirren, but that's mainly because I'm fairly certain Helen Mirren can do anything.

Jessica Walter? Interesting. Not quite right, but not bad, either.....

I'm still going with Leslie Hendrix as Bacco. And also as the Klingon doctor, B'Oraq.

Jessica Walter definitely brings a more patrician attitude to the roles I've seen her in than I'd associate with Nan Bacco, but I was thinking about her in terms of her wit, her biting sarcasm, and her air of being in charge.

My apologies, then. I very definitely recall somewhere years ago seeing (either in a thread here or an interview somewhere) a short list of influences for Nan Bacco, "part this person, part that person, and a dash of Admiral Janeway," and I thought for sure it came from you.

This is a different character, but I can sort of see Wes Studi as Glinn Dygan!

^nice choice for a Cardassian, but way too old for Dygan.

Good point. If he were a few years younger, though, he'd fit the role well.

Other contenders for Cardassians (not Dygan) include Robert Patrick, Sam Neill, Jeremy Irons and Ed Harris.

Any characters whom Emily Blunt could work well as?

^ Jeremy Irons would be perfect for Adrik Thorsen (the Federation novel).

^Jeremy Irons would indeed be a good Adrik Thorsen.

As for Dygan, how about Matthew Gray Gubler?

Could work! I've not seen him in anything, but he fits the part.

    I stand corrected, gentlemen...

Javier Bardem as a Klingon or Cardassian, maybe?

Javier Bardem is too creepy for Star Trek, IMO. :p

^I like Rachel Weisz for Kammemor, personally, but Rose looks the part.
