It's fair to note that not all black men have tightly curled hair, but it's completely unfair to Christopher to accuse him of trying to marginalize anyone. He's having a difference of opinion about what the creative intent was in the depiction of a character, not trying to perpetuate the oppression of African Americans.

He was pretty good on Law & Order: LA.

I didn't think so. Not actively bad, perhaps, just kind of meh. IMHO.

I kept imagining Howard as Sam Bowers in Destiny for some reason.

I like Roger Cross for Bowers myself, but I could see Terrence Howard as a pretty good runner up. I liked him in the first Iron Man.
What do you guys think of Tzi Ma for Admr. Nogura?

Hmm, maybe, except he's Chinese instead of Japanese. And in the Vanguard novels, the authors have definitely written Nogura as though he were being played by the late Mako -- particularly in Storming Heaven, where there are repeated, colorful references to his gravelly voice.

Too bad Mako died. :( He would've made quite a good Nogura.

Well, FWIW, Sulu's supposed to be Japanese--and yet JJ cast a Korean to play him.

Sulu's not solely Japanese, he's of mixed Asian descent.

Quite right. "Sulu" isn't even a Japanese name; it's the name of a sea in the Philippines. Sulu was meant to represent a "pan-Asian" heritage. (The name "Sulu" is so un-Japanese, in fact, that in the Japanese dub they renamed him Kato.)

^^ Besides, he also had an Englishman play a Frenchman. And use the worst French accent, to boot. ;)

^Well, in Japanese, Kato would be pronounced "kah-to" rather than "kay-to."

In the DTI novels: how about Faran Tahir as Ranjea?

Maybe, though I had Sendhil Ramamurthy in mind.

Anyone else think Michael Ironside would do good in Star Trek?

    I can't decide who he'd play, maybe a Romulan?

I knew about Mako for Nogura, but I was trying to go with someone who's still alive. I know this is fantasy casting, so we don't have to stick with living people, but I was trying to treat this like I was actually casting this as a TV show that would be possible to make now.
And there have been plenty of situations where people of one nationality were played a character who was another.

That'll put marzipan in your pie plate, bingo!
Too young. I picture someone more grandfatherly, maybe a little paunchy.
