An alternate reality where Starfleet is run like a business? The crew would be executives, and the ship could still be the Enterprise.

DTI will have to chase down some rogue Ferengis. ;D

Starfleet would be sponsored.

A Mercedes badge on the saucer. MTV on the viewscreens. "Thank you for using T-Mobile" when using a communicator.

Instead of technobabble, we'd have 'office speak.' Make just as little sense, but much less effective.

Somehow, I'm thinking of that vignette in The Meaning of Life wherein the office buildings themselves engage in combat.

Like the Dutch businesses of the 15th -16th -17th centuries.

Exploring, making maps, discovering new lands, first contact with natives. spreading their political philosophy, sponsoring trade, fighting rivals.

Occasional letting the natives know that they're inferior.

Picard fires almost everyone on the ship, keeps Data around to do everyone else's job at no additional pay, then pockets a huge bonus for reducing payroll expenses so dramatically.

He then issues a subspace press release explaining how this will only benefit their customers, because now they're so lean and focused. Which he makes Data write, because, hey, he's an android and doesn't need bathroom breaks.

The Federation grows to over 150 species, this indicates a expansion in the Federation's "market share."

The Federation then quietly lobby's for increased regulations in the legal code to keep the "little fish" from gaining a foothold, thereby guaranteeing them few competitors.
