Well I wouldn't want Ronald in the background but otherwise I'd be cool with fryers.

Yeah :D Obviously it was VHS/DVD or whatever for those movies. It'll be Netflix for ST2013. But I don't really know if it's really a dig on the Star Trek movies .. I don't think much at all is worth me dropping dime at a theater, driving there, parking, making sure I've peed, etc. Too much hassle and expense unless it's really, really, good like LOTR. ST09 is okay. I've watched it about 20 times, just like 7-10 and I'll prolly watch the new one about that many times -- cause I like Star Trek. On my big screen TV though, where I can somewhat enjoy it. :guffaw:

The whole Delta Vega thing was still dumb :D

But since we're all Trekkies here, we shouldn't have a problem accepting that silly and borderline implausible explanation stating that "Delta Vega" isn't a planet's name, but rather a designation for a whole bunch of planets. :D

We Trekkies are all about suspending our disbelief by accepting implausible in-universe explanations, aren't we?

It's Delta Vega Minor, not Delta Vega Major.

    Retconned.

I prefer the explanation from the as-yet-unreleased novel To Seek a Newer World...
That "Delta Vega" is a generic name given to planets owned by the Delta-Vega (as in, Delta IV and Vega colony) Mining Corporation.

Although the simplest explanation, that it's simply a resued name (in the same way thousands of towns and cities on earth are endlessly duplicated), is good too.

I don't know what kind of Trekkies you hang out with, but in my social circles we bitch about this sort of thing and accuse it of ruining Trek's purity of spirit. And no, I don't know what that means.

I very much like the explanation behind the spoiler tag.

It also neatly takes care of planets being named with earth words.. yes I know the word Vulcan is an earth word but it's still nice to have a good reason for it not having Vulcan names. I also like seeing some commercial enterprises in use.

TOS/TAS had two Arrets: Sargon's planet of origin ("Return to Tommorrow") and Karla Five's homeworld ("The Counter-clock Incident").

TAS had Edos and TNG had the Edo.

There are several species of Rigellians/Rigelians and lots of Rigels.

I'm sure there are other similar duplications.

The kind of Trekkies who go to great lengths trying to come up with explanations for all that nonsensical bullshit which keeps reminding them that TNG and VOY aren't documentaries.

Many of them don't recognize the existence of this JJ person's fake "Star Trek", though.

I heard a lot of that, as a starry-eyed new fan, with ST:TMP, then ST II, and then ST IV ("dumbing down for the masses"), then TNG and ST V!

After becoming a Trek fan in 1980, I started reading some older fan materials and realised that some people had also hated Season Three of TOS and Filmation's TAS for similar reasons, and with the same intensity.

Hating new ST is apparently nothing new, but it always seems at odds for a show that espoused "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" (IDIC).

Mostly, I choose to hang with fans who have a positive outlook like my own, and we manage to enjoy most of what we see. If it's bad (eg. ST V) we see it a few times and have a laugh, and if it's good we see it lots.

I couldn't care less about the name of the planet -- it could be Earth for all I care. It's the entire storyline that took place between Kirk getting stranded on Delta Vega and him beaming out that's stupid.

Rest of the movie? Not as good as Expendables. Better than Speed II. I'll watch it, though.

Huh? Kirk gets chases by some creatures. Gets rescued by OldSpock. Finds out about Nero and how OldSpock got to the past. Gets a little pep talk from OldSpock. Meets Scotty who with a little help OldSpock get them back to the Enterprise.

    Not seeing the "stupid".

Where on ice planet Hoth did old Spock find a six foot long tree branch to set on fire and drive away the lizard?

I don't remember Kirk running pass any trees on his way to the cave.

Spock is the perfect boy scout, he knows he may need to rub sticks together so at any time he has some really big ones handy. You saw how big his furs were, he probably had them on his person all along.

Nero gave it to him. From the Narada's arboretum :p

(I also noticed some wood panelling in the buildings on Vulcan, and I haven't seen a Vulcan tree since "Yesteryear")

You didn't see any trees precisely because Spock had turned the one he found into firewood. :)
