Spielberg remakes Harvey

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8180911.stm

I don't have an objection to the principle - the original movie's an adaptation of a play anyway, but...

Pleasepleasepleaseplease...

Not Tom Hanks.

Or Tom Cruise

Or Jim Carrey

Ah, bollocks, it'll be Will Smith won't it?

Johnny Depp could probably pull it off; then again, he might be wary of over-exposure in that type of role.

No, no, NO. There's no replacing Jimmy Stewart!

Ugh.....I was really hoping he would make Lincoln. It's increasingly looking like Lincoln is never going to be made.

^, yeah, I remember reading that Liam Neeson (who was linked with the lead role) had gone on to make The A-Team because Lincoln wasn't proceeding.

Harvey is my all-time favorite movie. It has been since I was a kid.

They had better not fuck this one up. How do you replace Josephine Hull for crying out loud? "Myrtle Mae, see who the stranger is in the bathtub!"

I'll keep an open mind... but I am not optimistic.

I'm guessing that Spielberg is behind the special edition, as well.

What does anyone, including Spielberg, feel they can bring to this remake? What's next? 'It's a Wonderful Life'?
Are there so few new ideas in Hollywood?
I would be worried if it were the Spielberg of the Jaws, ET, Raiders era but the Spielberg of Indy 4 and The Terminal? No thanks.

Nnnnnnnooooooo!

I'm not going. I'm just not. I don't care who is signed. The original is perfect in every way, and why mess with perfection?

Although now that I think of it, someone already kind of did...but only kind of. The very first version of Harvey that I ever saw was a Hallmark Hall of Fame special done to celebrate the anniversary of the original movie or play or something. But I can forgive it because it was the 1970s, and goodness knows worse things happened back then, and anyway it nonetheless starred Jimmy Stewart. Kelso is absolutely right that there's no replacing him, nor Josephine Hull.

And besides, can Stephen Spielburg make a movie like this without gooping it up with a lot of special effects and so on? I don't think so.

^ There was also a TV movie about a decade ago. It starred Harry Anderson as Elwood and Leslie Nielson as Dr. Chumley.

Never seen it, but I've heard that it was decent.

Um...Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Munich...just to name a few recent flicks of his that had a minimal, if any, use of SFX.

I said "a movie like this" - I know he's made movies without gooping them up with special effects, but come on. Does anybody seriously believe he'll be able to make a movie about a 6-foot invisible rabbit without special effects?

Huh. Well. Yeah...

Is Spielberg actually directing this, or is this just another one of his "executive producer" projects (i.e. projects he funds but is on set for less than a full shooting day).
