True Blood

Went over to a friend's house tonight and watched the first 3 episodes of True Blood Season 2. (He's a professor at the UNC School of the Arts, and one of his former students is in it - the preacher's wife). Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Bonus points for Michelle Forbes. I'm betting she's the high priestess of the Cult of Bacchus and is somehow tied up with the origin of the vampires.

Anyhoo, I was wondering if there are any other fans here...

With everyone going on about it, I suppose it'll have to be my next "premy" show after I finish The Wire.

I love the series, but I am a little sad that they are deviating so much from the books.

Re: True Blood

Yeah, I'm a big fan of True Blood, as well. Saw the entire first season in one sitting and I'm really loving the second season so far.

As far as Maryann is concerned, she's likely a Maenad. And I very much doubt she has anything to do with the origin of the vampires. After all, we've already seen that there're other supernatural creatures in existence. Sam the shapeshifter, werewolves, and Sookie was apparently attacked by a minotaur (and I know for a fact that there're other creatures in the universe which just haven't appeared yet, like the fey). So just because another supernatural creature turns up, that doesn't mean it's tied in to the origins of the vampires. Maryann's got her own thing going on that isn't related to the vampires.

I'm actually enjoying S2 more then I liked S1. I really liked the fact that they added Maryann and Jessica to the show.

Yes, please do. I didn't create one this week because ... well, there wasn't a new episode this week. But I'll have one ready on Sunday.

That'll be some serious tonal whiplash.

I'm not a fan of the whole "modern vampire" genre--I guess I just don't understand the appeal.

In fact, I vividly remember going to see Bram Stoker's Dracula with some Goth-girl friends of mine. They all loved it. I hated it.

But I am nonetheless intrigued by this series, if for no other reason than that it's on HBO.

Could somebody give me a (very) quick rundown? In what sort of style is this show made? Would it change my mind? Or should I leave it alone?

It's a fun show. Yes it's about vampires and other magical stuff, but at it's heart it's almost a comedy. At the very least it never takes itself too seriously. There's mystery, romance, violence, comedy, and great characters. It's a "modern" vampire story, but don't let that mean it's like Twilight or another stories of the sort.

For all it's craziness, it also tells some great stories. The south (particularly Louisiana) is the backdrop of the show. Vampires have been "outed" into mainstream society. True Blood really takes a look at Vampires as an analogy for prejudices against minority groups.

The main character, Sookie, has a special ability that separates her from the normal people as well. She befriends a Vampire named Bill, and of course their relationship evolves into something more. Usually each season has an overall mystery that our main characters have to solve. Luckily the main characters are backed up a awesome supporting cast.

Don't let recent Vampire stories turn you off from True Blood. It's a lot of fun!

-ps there is usually a lot of nudity!
