Re: Movies Seen in 2009

I recently saw Star Trek: TMP at cinema. I enjoyed it more than I ever had before.
I also saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I thought was quite good, but a little disappointing. It did seem to be a labour of love though.
Saw Harry Brown on the same day. I liked that too, I suppose it's kind of a British Gran Torino but it's much grimmer.

Re: Movies Seen in 2009

Went to see Old Dogs at a free screenin' this mornin'.

It was not good. And Bernie Mac filmed a few scenes before he died, so right there in the middle of the movie, it gets depressin' when he shows up.

Next up, a screenin' of The Fantastic Mr. Fox on Tuesday, and a screenin' of Armored next Thursday.

Will update the list later...

A Serious Man

My god, I love the Coen Brothers so very unreasonably much. And even as much of a fanboy as I am, this bleak, depressing but occasionally funny film about meaning and meaninglessness in the travails of life was nothing less than absolute genius. One of my favourite films of the year? Yes, yes it is.

So, yeah, go see it.

Re: Movies Seen in 2009

Just finished watchin' Angels & Demons, rented on DVD from Blockbuster.

Really not at all impressed...but it was better than The daVinci Code.

Missed out on the screenin' of The Fantastic Mr Fox the other night, but I will be goin' to see Armored next week, and may pick up a pass this weekend for The Princess and the Frog.

Will update my list later...

Re: Movies Seen in 2009

The White Ribbon

Does this film live up to its considerable acclaim and awards at Cannes?

In a word, yes.

Perhaps we've seen this sort of film before - looking at the brutality of a supposedly closed, innocent rural community - but seldom have I seen it so subtle, understated, but... damn potent. While there are many excellent performances - particularly from the children - Maria-Victoria Dragus is something of a standout among the young talent. There's so much left unsaid about her which she manages to make blatantly clear in her scenes.

But again you're either someone who's seen this, desperately wants to see this, or hasn't heard of it and may be none too interested, so these comments probably matter for naught.

Re: Movies Seen in 2009

Assassin Ninja.

If you like whole limbs being sliced off and the gory details seen splashing all over the screen, if you like seeing young women impaled with katana and blood gushing from their mouths, or children's feet whipped with blood pouring from them, if you like watching a guy's head get sliced off at the mouth and the dangling flesh going everywhere, or a woman being sliced up and put in a washing machine as the blood pours from the handle, and if you like straightforward paint by numbers storytelling which offers absolutely no deviation from the obvious conclusion reached about 30 minutes into the movie, then Assassin Ninja is for you!

4/10 stars, and that's being very generous.

My girlfriend and I watched Zack and Miri Make a Porno last night.

Freakin' hilarious! I was laughin' so hard, sound stopped comin' out.

Will add it to the list later.

Up [C]

I loved Wall-E, but I really couldn't get into this one. It's definitely original, but that's about all I can say. It really didn't leave any long-lasting impressions with me.

500 Days of Summer [A]

This movie is excellent! I highly recommend it.

New Moon (D) - Not very good. Not atrociously awful, but bad.

Whoops! I swear I knew the title, I don't know how I did that.

Point being, avoid it!
