Re: Have you named your child after a sci fi character?

A former boyfriend of mine had a nephew called Leto who I believed was named after a character from Dune. I have never read the book so I am unsure if the character was worthy of having a child named after him or not - maybe someone could tell me.

Well, Frank Herbert didn't invent the name Leto. It's actually a name from Greek mythology, except there it's female, a goddess who was the mother of Artemis and Apollo. It's also an Italian surname; the earliest person of that name listed in Wikipedia is Giulio Pomponio Leto, a 15th-century humanist philosopher.

I am sure that all that is true. However, without a doubt, the child concerned was named after the character from Dune which is why I asked about what sort of character he was.

Duke Leto was the father of Paul Atreides, the hero of the first book. Leto is a heroic figure, betrayed by his enemies.

It's kind of like naming a kid Jor-El, but less obvious.

Well, you said before that you "believed" he was named for Duke Leto, which suggested that you weren't certain.

The uncle told me that the boy was named after a character from a sci-fi novel his sister had read but he didn't know the name of the book. The reason I said 'I believe' is because I can't say I am 100% certain that the name Leto hasn't appeared in any other sci-fi novel but if it was another sci-fi book it must be an rather obscure one.

Okay, in that case, it probably was Dune. Leto as a male given name isn't something I can ever recall coming across outside that series.

I had a cat named Ezri once.

My current cat is named Wicket, after the leader of the ewoks in ROTJ. He's a smart cat too.

I think if I had a son I would be tempted to name him James with Tiberius as the middle name. But I still think Zefram is the most awesome Trek name for a boy. Suits the names used nowadays too.

My dog is called Mitchell. Does that count?

I wanted to call him Marlowe, but my wife gave me crap about it.

I really cannot fathom naming a child Anakin. Especially if it happened post-prequels.

It could! Mitchell was a movie riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000. That just means your dog is named after a terrible Joe Don Baker movie.

Plus, if your last name is Cochrane, right now the timing would be about perfect too.
