New Foundation films

Probably posted here before but... why oh why do they get directors who are completely illsuited to certain projects?! Roland Emmerich to bring Isaac Asimovs foundation series to the big screen. Oh dear.

McG must have been busy... I swear they'd hire Ed Wood if he was available!

The Foundation saga really needs to be a TV series - give it to Ron Moore...

Emmerich isn't the ideal person for the job, but it could be far worse.

I don't think Foundation is really going to translate well onto the big screen no matter who is directing it. But I'm sure it'll get radically revamped from the original story.

True. We need a series and enough episodes tol really explore and stick to the novels.

Agreed, and Moore might work well for it considerig that it is largely a story of a Empire/civilization in decline.

Trying to build a film around the structure of the novels would be insane. There's no single character or plotline for audiences to follow.

I could see a film based around the Salvor Hardin stories working. "The Big and the Little" would work as a film. (Bel Riose is one of my favorite characters -- the man who takes history head-on and loses.) The two Mule stories would work well. And Arkady Darrell's story would probably work. (Of course, that's probably my fondness for Michael Whelan's depiction of her on the mid-80s Del Rey edition of Second Foundation speaking here.)

It would be interesting to see what a Foundation film would be. I'd hope it would be a noble failure, but I fear that it would be an ordinary, run-of-the-mill failure.

Yeah, Emmerich being attached to direct doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence, but we shall see. Perhaps if he gets a decent screenwriter he could make something watchable.

Either way, I agree with the above posts that Foundation doesn't really lend itself well to a big-screen adaptation. Since it details the history of Terminus over the course of almost two centuries, it's very episodic, and I don't really see Hollywood producing an anthology-style science-fiction film. A television mini-series would be the best way to faithfully translate Foundation (as well as the subsequent books) to the screen, IMO.

It would be great if it was directed by a solemn Russian director and went on for 12 hours. If it were serious, ponderous and philosophical with artistic integrity it would be a classic.

Next up, Will Smith is cast as Seldon and goes on an ass kicking romp through the galaxy in the name of Psychohistory with his trusty sidekick Daneel!
