How does it work? Do you have to avoid the thread during the course of the contest? Is there a way to view the pics/captions without knowing who wrote it-for completely honest and uncolored reactions? And how do you judge funny? Seriously, what is the process-or does each caption contest just wing it?

ed- *stubs toe on ground bashfully* Thanks for running the contest. Any "too much time" gags you got were meant in jest. *pulls foot from mouth* I mean, it was great and sorry to see you go!

Well, honestly, it's very simple. I just read each caption on its own merit and looked at names later. It's not hard to avoid the names. The mods here are great about pinning and unpinning threads if you use the "Notify" button.

I'll leave judging contest #18 to the next person who takes over.

FWIW Mistral, after judging a few contests it's hard not to recognize posters' styles. But in the Enterprise contest I always just shrink the window to cover the poster names while I read. I sometimes don't know who won until after I've posted the results!

As for judging what's funny? The best way, and many working comics will attest to this - follow your own laughter. I usually see which ones make me LOL, then cut them down from there. But sometimes I choose one that took some crafting over something just blurted out.

Rule #1? Have fun!

Thanks for running the contests. I can't tell you how nice it is to be notified about something fun every now and again.

It'll agonize me to recuse myself from submitting captions but I am willing to run them for a while, at least after this week (I'm on vacation).

Oh, well, I do still volunteer to help, but obviously missed the start of this next contest. (I warned I was on holiday last week.)
