Re: Billy Campbell almost got Riker?

Reading this thread made the images of Jonathan Frakes' head on Billy Campbell's body, and then vice-versa, appear in my mind. It was an incredibly disturbing experience, and I hope it never, ever happens again.

What it comes down to is that like him, hate him, or feel completely ambiguous about him - Will Riker is Jonathan Frakes, and Jonathan Frakes is Will Riker. And Tom Riker. And a bible story narrator. But mostly Will Riker. No one that has posted here will ever picture the Riker character any other way.

Except the way I started this post by describing. Don't do it. Stay with Jonathan William Riker Frakes.

Now I'm trying to imagine Jonathan Frakes as the Rocketeer. Could you imagine him zooming at you at the speed of sound, armed with that trademark grin?

I think he was very proud to be both tall and flexible.

Who the hell sits like that?
The only seats that were tall enough for him were the bridge consoles ...

Am I the only one who is surprised that Okona never came back for more appearances? Not saying I'd necessarily want to see him more than once, but it felt to me like he was being introduced as a kind of Harry Mudd character.

It's had 25 years to sink in, I'm not especially surprised.

I've know about this for a while, and still feel that things ended up the way they should have. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED The Rocketeer (still wish Disney had made the two sequels they were going to), but Frakes IS Riker. In my opinion, he was the best choice.

Campbell's doing a pretty good job on the new SyFy/Ron Moore series: Helix

and he's still thin.

Re: Billy Campbell almost got Riker?

Okona was terrible, but still the best thing about an embarrassing TNG episode. If they'd just quit harping on about how outrageous the guy was supposed to be, it would have been okay, but as it was, I can only categorize it as hackneyed at best.

Apart from Okona, I only remember Campbell as Luke Fuller in Dynasty, but I might just give Helix a try. I'm a big BSG fan so I've been waiting for the excuse to take a look at that show...

But as a Riker/Frakes fan, I'm sure happy Campbell didn't get the role!

Re: Billy Campbell almost got Riker?

Rick Berman addresses this in the Season One Bluray documentary, saying then-Head of Paramount Television John Pike said he wouldn't follow Campbell into battle, or something to that effect. So it was Frakes that won the part.
