Point taken, but Finnegan and Kirk seemed to have some knock-down drag-outs at the Academy. And Cupcake needed 3 others to challenge the Kirkster, so...

The new altered timeline could have Finnegan's parents moving to the States and raising him there. Thus no Irish accent.

Cupcake was a total prick but he wasn't nearly as annoying as Finnegan. So he wasn't the same guy.

It seems as if this version of Kirk had a habit of looking for fights in bars that may have made him less of a push-over by the time he got to the Academy - at a considerably older age than in oldTrek, of course.

Which sort of answers the plausibility question - Finnegan as he existed in oldTrek probably had graduated the Academy before PineKirk arrived.

Still, I think the idea has charm.

Yeah, I do too--but the accent was sorely needed to reinforce that impression.

Oh please. Finnegan was a character of depth and complexity. Cupcake was a brute thug. There's no similarity at all.

It would be cute if Cupcake was Finnegan...however, it would also be cool if Cupcake was a creation of this movie. Let's let some new things be just that - NEW THINGS.

I agree.

That said, this guy reminded me not at all of Finnegan - but he did remind me a lot of someone else: The guard that called Sulu "Tiny" in Star Trek III.

I don't think he's supposed to be Finnegan, or else the name would have been used to refer to him. Besides, he doesn't have an Irish brogue or look remotely like the old actor.
