Maybe a monk on Borath. Oh wait, he did that too already... Well, anyway I'm glad all of this fanwank with every Harry, Dick and Tom from every Trek show putting in an appearance is done away with in the comics so that the film itself will be able to focus on the really interesting story.

I've got the sneaking suspicion that this is the main reason why they published the comic in the first place (I don't say that's a bad thing - once it's out as a TPB, I'll get it)... as a tip to the hat for the TNG fans, as an attempt to calm down the canonistas, as a device to save precious explaining time on the big screen and, of course, as a kind of relieve valve for all the fanwankers (God, I hate this word, but, like they say, 'When the shoe fits...') out there.

And there's nothing wrong with that. I enjoy a good wank every once in a while myself. (Talking FANwank of course ) It just happens to be very distracting if it acts as a substitute for a good story on screen. ENT Season 4, I'm looking at you... As for the movies, I hated Robert Picardo's cameo in First Contact. No unnecesary, added nothing to the story except a forced and unnatural comic relief moment were none was called for.

Also, all these so-called fan valentines have a way of excluding uninitiated viewers from the experience. And I think even the most die-hard fans these days would agree that new fans need to come onboard if the franchise is to survive.

A minute of Bob Picardo excluded non-fans from FC? That's a bit of a strong way of putting it...

No, I didn't mean that particular example as a necessarily fan-exclusive moment. Although it was off-putting to me as a regular viewer of VGR and fan in general, so I can imagine a casual viewer might've had a similar WTF? experience in that scene. Or the Dixon Hill holodeck scene, for that matter...

Well, then we all have to read the tie-in comic while being locked up in the bathroom...
But seriously, Star Trek XI needs this kind of background information - for the sake of Star Trek's overall continuity and to give the long-time fans what they want and need - without actually BEING included in the movie as such... because if it WERE included, Star Trek's newly-acquired (or should I rather say 'reacquired') kewlness factor would be gone in a flash... and then we would be back where we left off with Nemesis.
