If I were Taylor, I'd either bomb Starkwood or send all available forces there to tear that place apart. Would the American people of the 24 Universe really mind? Considering all that has happened to the country these past six seasons?
It's a little crazy that there isn't martial law after all of these nuclear detonations on American soil, especially the one that went off in the middle of LA.

"Goddamn it, Commander, one last time. You tell your men to safety their weapons, drop 'em on the deck."
"I cannot give that order!"
"I am not gonna repeat that order!"
"I will not give that order!"
"What the hell is wrong with you, man?"
"Stand fast!"

'Cause he's an evil asshole with delusions of grandeur?
Seriously though...... what is the reason in the story?
His original reason was to stage the bio-weapon attacks as a false-flag operation, giving the appearance of a foreign power (probably Sengala since they no longer serve any purpose to Starkwood and it lends the story credibility) attacking the US. The US response would be to grant private military firms - Starkwood in particular - more contracts and more power to act in ways the US military can not, both overseas and domestically.

However, once it was revealed that Starkwood itself is behind the previous and imminent attacks, all logical motive for his actions flies right out the window. Starkwood will not recieve more government contracts, it will not be allowed to survive as a corporate entity on US soil, and 1,500 mercs or not, it's gonna get it's ass kicked by the feds sooner rather than later.

His motivations make absolutely no sense once the cat was out of the bag, and as Speedle said, the best option at that point would have simply been to destroy any evidence linking them to Sengala and the bio-weapons, and if that failed to fall on his sword and take personal responsibility whilst sparing the company most of the blame. He's just a crazy guy with lots of mercenaries at this point (not that his actions were all that rational before).

As far as the episode itself goes, it felt like a constant build up to ultimate wood, only to go flaccid at the last moment. You can't give me helicopters sweeping in with Navy SEALS and FBI-HRT agents and then have it end in a weak-ass stand-off without a shot fired. I at least expected the warehouse to blow up with Agent Larry Two-Face in it or something.

Best part of the episode was the mention of potential Presidential Chief of Staff Rick Berman. I damn near coughed up a lung at that one, and no one else in the room had any idea why. 24 - Day 8: Jack versus Future Guy and the remnants of the dead Christopher Henderson's Terra Prime organization. Future Guy will be revealed to be former President Logan... I mean Admiral Black from the Mirror Universe.

Whew! Glad I wasn't the only one who caught that. My boyfriend isn't a big enough nerd to have been as impressed as I was with the "Rick Berman" reference!

Coto and Braga could've at least used "Richard Berman" to not make their Berman homage so obvious.

Oh come on guys, once Rick Berman joins the writing staff next year and introduces time travel, a lot of our issues with how quickly it takes to get from one place to another pretty much fall by the wayside.

Okay, thanks. That's clarified what I thought was bugging me about it all. While I'm still enjoying the season overall, it's issues like this that dig away at that enjoyment. Granted, the best part about this season is watching it with my sons.

But once the influence of the Sengala plot was muted, if not removed altogether, everything with Starkwood seemed so elementally flawed. I suppose they can make something out of the primary antagonist being insane....

This has to be a double cross or something.

-Chris
And the most obvious double-cross imaginable, too. Really, did anyone not see that coming? Tony should have figured it out when the guy sent to interrogate him reveals that he bet on Tony not talking. Hodges may be insaaane, but you'd expect him not to send a guy to do a job who has a motive to fail at the job. Therefore, the entire story was BS and so was everything subsequent to that.

Threatening to fire on federal officials should lead to a bombing run.
Is it just me, or did the military brass in the discussion with the POTUS come off as weirdly wimpy? If there really were a rogue military presence within the U.S., I'd expect that to generate a pretty serious smack-down from the Feds, of whatever branch of government makes sense, but I would not expect hand-wringing and weeping from anyone, just a cold-blooded discussion of who exactly should be in charge of that bombing run, for Consitutional purposes. After all, Starkwood is a major frakkin threat to the authority of the Federal government. They can't allow that to go unchecked for any length of time - surely they must know that?

I think the brass was just made to be wimpy to make the POTUS look good.

And I agree, Hodges must be simply out of his mind at this point.

I caught that reference right away but am sure it was more Braga then Coto.

Of course, it was the shifty, manipulative, sexy-evil Olivia who suggested Berman over Justman. Message?

Don't worry about character motivation. This is actually part of the master plan. The ENTIRE Starkwood and Hodge storyline is YET another diversion. There's still eight episodes left!!! Tony is actually the mastermind behind it all and Olivia Taylor is his partner. It's all about Skynet. And The Pattern. And the Dollhouse. And reavers. And Springfield.

What, no Goa'uld? That's what 24 needs. More Goa'uld.

But we all know the Dharma Initiative is behind it all.
