Belief in God and its effect on the finale

I'm an atheist and I loved the stuff about god in the finale. What interests me is that I have seen a lot of other people on this board starting posts saying the exact same thing, so the thing I want to know is whether your own personal beliefs, or lack of belief, affected your enjoyment of the finale or if the complaints about god in this finale are more based on a perceived deus ex machina ending.

I have mixed feelings about the finale itself, but I liked that God was left mysterious and not simply explained as an advanced being or civilization like in most sci-fi. It was a different approach, and I thought it was interesting. I had fully expected some sort of Ship of Lights reveal as god. The idea of a universal source of creativity and revelation that many of us, and even artificial life can tap into is intriguing.

The 'God' stuff in the finale didn't bother me in the slightest. It certainly didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story.

I'm a complete Atheist, but despite this I enjoyed the finale. I do agree that this may be because of the deliberate ambiguity of the scene. If their had been a deliberate reveal of some big beardy man, or anything similar, it would have felt contrived and out of place. Like wise any 'God is an alien' type ending. As it was we were left with questions, but they were interesting questions.
Even Baltar's appeal to faith could be seen as faith between human and Cylon.

I'm a militant agnostic and an utter despiser of organized religion, but I also loved the finale and don't mind all the religious aspects to the story. It's science fiction, and I consider the Bible the best-selling fantasy novel of all time. It's the most appropriate forum for religion I could think of.

Probably second, behind that one with the little fellas and the ring...

I'm an athiest and pretty much gritted my teeth through the whole "God has a plan for you," thing. The whole higher powers thing just doesn't sit well with me. I'm struggling with the finale, actually. Much of it I'm okay with, some of it I loathe. Interestingly enough, the stuff I hate hasn't much to do with God.

I have no time for religion but being aware of our existence in an unmeasurable universe that is largely composed of nothing much at all leads me to believe that there is more, far more than we can know, and part of that may well be god. So I voted as finale hating god believeriner.

Well LotR is my favorite book, but I'm trying to be objective. I'm pretty sure that with a few centuries' head start it's still ahead.

Re: Belief in God and its effect on the finale

I was raised in organized religion, then for a long time was an agnostic. But I found that no single "ism", be it atheism, agnosticism or any theism, offers answers that are definitive. I'm certain there is SOMETHING, both higher in this multiverse and something of us that transcends meat/atoms.

But what that is will remain elusive, though answers are there for those who strive.

Galactica embraced this ambiguious certitude, and I loved that.

^^ Not when you factor in that bibles don't so much get sold as they do given away

I'd definitely back a program to put copies of LotR in hotel nightstands... that might actually do some good!

^^ I don't remember too many wars/crusades being waged in Gandalf's name, so it couldn't do any worse!

Re: Belief in God and its effect on the finale

Oh, religion gets way too unfair a rap for a reason for wars. The reason those wars happen is because you get enough assholes who think they've got it all figured out and can't deal with anyone else having a different opinion.

Some of the biggest human tragedies in the 20th century involved militant ATHEISTS being the same way. The Soviet Union, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, etc...

It's not a religious thing, it's a human thing.

Re: Belief in God and its effect on the finale

Well religion has been the cause for a lot of wars as well as more earthly concerns... but even if you think they're all about resources or power, it is true that religion has been used as a justification for a lot of awful things that, for many of us, belie its protestations to moral authority. But this isn't the thread for too much of THAT discussion, methinks.

And I also think that widespread "isms" -- beliefs like the communism/capitalism socialism/democracy clash of the late 20th century -- are functionally religions anyway.

Politics is a special case of religion, like a square is a special case of a rectangle. You just worship different things, and in a democracy we worship ourselves.
