What if...

Tyrol didn't go bezerk, and Cavil got resurrection tech - would that have been enough to break the cycle, or if not, how might things have played out differently?

I think Cavil would've caught up to them and destroyed them.

Re: What if...

The Final Five would have learned to swallow their pride, accept their mistake, and help Cavil and his Cylons move their programs into forms greater than human. Cavil, Doral, and Simon, on the other hand, would have to swallow their pride, accept their mistakes, and admit that genocide was not the answer, cooperation was. They'd free their Centurions. Some humans, probably including Baltar, would join the Cavil-Cylons in exploring new frontiers of existence. Some Cavils, Dorals, and Simons would live with the rebels and the humans, realizing their complete lack of difference. They'd try to find a new planet and settle down. Since we're assuming the universe the same, this can even be the real Earth...

We would all learn to forgive and forget and face tomorrow with determination and fraternity. We would all have coexisted peacefully, thanks to Dr. Gaius Baltar, and God's plan would be fulfilled.

Sigh.

Re: What if...

Did god fire Racetrack's nukes before or After Tyrol flipped out? Maybe that was the big moment that determined which way everything would go. Once Tyrol makes the choice, it's all a mop up for the next cycle. But, would giving Cavil the secret actually be ending the cycle or just continuing it?

That's a good point. I forgot about Racetrack.

There is literally no point in even discussing 'what ifs' on a show where the answer is "it was all God's plan"

If Cavil didn't blow his head off? That was God's unknowable plan.

If Tyrol didn't wig out on Tory? God works in mysterious ways.

Ugh.

Not a chance.

Cavill was just plain nuts. A bullet through the brain case was the best he could do in terms of self-improvement.

Re: What if...

My immediate thought when one of the other Cylons (either Simon or Doral, can't recall which) said that the resurrection tech was coming through and "looks legit," was that Cavil would turn on the humans and rebel Cylons as soon he had what he wanted. So no, I don't think it would have ended anything. It would only have given a madman exactly what he wanted, and left him no reason to spare anyone's lives.

He gave his word.

A man's word is his bond. If you can't trust that, then you can't trust anything in this world.

Things would have worked out fine.

A silly set of propositions in a series (hell, in an episode) that makes it an essential point that we all have free will, and live and die by the decisions we make. Witness Roslin's decision to join Adar's campaign, Adama's decision not to take the cushy desk job, etc. in the very episode, and reconsider your point.

Take a second look at this answer by Ronald D. Moore concerning this episode:

Ronald D. Moore wrote:
There are continuing themes in our lives that make us believe there is such a thing as fate, there is such a thing as destiny. And yet the belief that we have free will and we make our own decisions is equally powerful. Those two ideas are almost irreconcilable unless you believe that there is some sort of interplay between fate and free will that we can't really delineate specifically.

I actually had faith in Cavils' promise this time around, but knew it was not to be once Tyrols' eyes bulged *that's a good idea for an avatar, actually...*
