If he had just come out and said what they were doing was wrong, and he reported it, that would be fine. It's the backtracking he seems to be doing now that makes him look bad.

Old robot story by Asimov had one of the characters wondering whether the part of that Robot Law about harming humans - the part that said a robot "could not through inaction allow a human to come to harm" - was important. The other character pointed out that without it a robot could drop a heavy weight from height on to a human being fully knowing that it was fast enough to rescue the human - and then after dropping the weight just change its mind about the rescue. Of course, that's ridiculously compartmentalized reasoning...
