Sam was supposed to be older, even if the only visual evidence was the cheesy porno moustache in "Operation--Annihilate."

In TV you normally denote age and/or seniority by how much clothing...facial hair...that sort of thing. So my guess is that Sam is probably at least a few years older than James and would probably already be off at university or some other school by the time his brother entered Starfleet.

Which would mean Kirk's upbringing wasn't that different this time around...so there'd have to be some other reason he's a loser.

Yeah, but if she were killed at the command of Kodos, wouldn't Kirk have made a bigger deal of it in "Conscience of the King"? Instead of "all those people" it would have been "...and for the love of God, Bones...my OWN MOTHER!"

I mean, you really can't separate it when it hits that close to home.
