Star Trek season 1 on blu-ray: April 28

From blu-ray.com:
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1 to Blu-ray on April 28th. Video will be presented in 1.33:1 1080p accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (a departure of the normal Dolby TrueHD soundtrack from the studio) along with the original mono track for purist.

Continuing with that theme, viewers will be able to select - via seamless branching - on whether to watch to the shows in their original splendor, or in the newly remastered form.

Extras for this release include:
  • Spacelift: Transporting Trek into the 21st Century
  • Reflections on Spock
  • Life Beyond Trek: William Shatner
  • To Boldly Go... Season One
  • The Birth of a Timeless Legacy
  • Sci-Fi Visionaries
  • Billy Blackburn's Treasure Chest: Rare Home Movies and Special Memories
  • Kiss ‘N' Tell: Romance in the 23rd Century
  • Interactive Enterprise Inspection

I might just make the upgrade to blu-ray now.

Full list of inclusions from Trekweb:

Interesting that they've put them in wacky airdate order.

Interesting bit: "have the option of selecting the original mono sound heard on the series' original television airings decades ago."

I hope this is accurate, as this would solve all of the audio errors which have bugged the crap out of me since the first DVDs came out.

I do wonder about this seamless branching thing. Some of the live action footage cuts to the new footage a few seconds earlier than it did with the original stuff. I wonder how this will effect the original versions?

I don't think that where the live action cuts occur should be a problem. The branching will occur before the new effect shot, so that if you choose the original version you will see a little bit more of the original live action which will lead to the original effects.

Yeah, I was thinking of it the opposite way, for some reason. I'm pretty jazzed about the original mono audio track. That would make these sets the best of all three worlds. :-)

I held off of buying the DVD versions specifically to wait for the Blu-Ray release, and here it is. I'm STOKED.

I've only seen a few of the episodes in my adult years, most of the original series watching I did was as a kid. This is going to be a lot of fun.

In a way that makes people much more picky about the picture quality. And in a way that makes it a living hell for us collectors.

The fact that they are including the old mono soundtrack mix is amazing enough for me to be excited about it. It took a higher quality format to finally give me the lesser quality version I always wanted on DVD. Funny that.
