As for the lack of people answering questions, maybe Ben and Ms. Hawkings did meet the Losties back in the past. So they don't want to give them to much information because Ben's and Eloise's past is still the Losties future. And they can't give them too much info about their own future in case something goes wrong.
The question isn't why Ben and Hawking don't tell them anything, it's why the Losties don't even bother to ask.

(Maybe a future episode will include a flashback in which we find out that, right after Desmond storms out, they *did* ask, and that Hawking told them everything. Hey, I can dream, can't I?)

It is an interesting point that they don't ask more questions. I remember this drove me crazy back when Juliet joined the survivors; why don't you ask her about the Others like what their damn name is??? This ep didn't bother me at the time, I think because they're all so scared and hunted that they're grateful to get a magic answer of how to go back (Jack specifically of course). There's also the fact that the others clearly didn't trust Hawking so why bother to ask questions to someone who will just lie to you?
or why Jack never sat down with Ben during their time in L.A. and asked, "so all that messed-up stuff you put us through back on the island..what was that all about?"

yeah, i know...if Ben's always a liar, why bother asking. But Jack's always been the man wanting answers and having a plan.

speaking of which - who gets on a plane hoping to end up in the jungle and wears a suit?

We have 24 eps/season and it moves too slow. They listen and cut it down to 16 eps/season and it's too fast. No wonder the producers drink heavily.
I had no problems with the pace of seasons 1-3 I just thought they needed to cut out the filler episodes. Season 4 had a perfect pace. I just happen to think that this latest episode just went too far too quickly because the following episodes are going to get stalled in explaining everything which has happened here.

The boat ride would have been from England, where Widmore gave Desmond the information about Hawking, to LA. To get there before she left and to get this over with for Penny's sake I think they would fly.
Why wouldn't the boat ride be from L.A., where he is now?
The ride *to* LA, not *from* LA. He's saying that he thinks Desmond arrived in LA by plane rather than boat, because going from the UK to Cali by boat would take a ridiculously long time. If so, then he wouldn't have a boat docked in LA.
Who says that Desmond and Penny were on the same timeline as the O6? The events we saw with them could have been several weeks or even months before the O6's story begins in season 5 which would give them more than sufficient time to sail from wherever they were to England to L.A. Desmond would want to stay off the grid as much as possible. Sailing as opposed to flying would help that goal a lot more.

Well I guess they were trying to recreate the original flight experience as much as possible and Jack was wearing a suit the first time.

As for why Jack didn't talk to Ben during the flight when they were sitting right next to each other I have no idea. Unless Jack tried to and Ben ignored him or wouldn't answer him (but if that was the case, then they should have at least shown that). Or if not Jack (he seems have given into fate) at least Sun seems to be logical/practical enough to do some questioning while in flight.

No one says. It's just me guessing. And I could be wrong of course.

We don't know how long she has been in LA. We don't know exactly when he went to see Widmore. All we really know is he showed up at the same time as the O6. But the way the episodes are constructed it seem these events happened within days.

No, you're right. The way the episodes are constructed, it does seem that way. However, one would think that the events happening on-island are happening in tandem with the O6 and Desmond stories and we know that's really not true. I'm just saying that when you add time constraints (and the very realistic idea that Desmond would probably want to keep to the seas and keep from Ben finding them) its more likely than not that Desmond, Penny and little Charlie's story started a few weeks pre-O6.

I'm just bummed out that we no appear to be going back to the (IMO) worn out flashback format. I really did like the structure of S4 so far, but I assume we'll now spend the rest of the season filling in time with flashbacks that covered the last 36 hrs, plus other O6 happenings in the wide world.

Next episode already has much flashback material.

Hurley must have brought Charlie's guitar. Maybe that was what Jack's father's shoes were to Jack.
Good call (and Mr Light who also noted it). I didn't even think about why Hurley had a guitar, but that makes a lot of sense.
Siyed mirrors Kate the first time(being brought onboard in hand cuffs by a US Marshal) & I think Kate is mirroring Claire.(worried about the right choice for her baby)

Who is Sun mirroring?

I think Ben went after Penny because that was his "promise" to an old friend. Killing Penny also gives Desmond a reason to come to the island.
Gertch, the length of the boat ride might not matter if the Island moves.

marc0702, Sun left her baby with their grandparents. Seeing how she was set out to kill Ben, she already knew she wasn't returning to him. She bought out her fathers company and probably set up a trust fund for him. So her child is safe and set for life. Arron is with him I think because the clue was telling the Grandmother that the baby has a new playmate.
I believe Sun is mirroring Rose and how at that time she was concerned with her husband, in this case its Jin as opposed to Bernard. Ben gave Jack some privacy, and probably left to go to the bathroom, just how Charlie was in the Bathroom in the pilot episode.

And Frank was originally supposed to pilot Flight 815, so maybe him flying Flight 316 somehow also helps "balance" things out. Now that I think about it my old, Infinite Improbability Theory might be making a come back in my mind.

Re: Lost 5x06: "316"

God, that was a great episode.

For the very first time, from the re-enactment of the series' opening shot, and Hawking's discussion of the Island and Jack's role, I could sense that the LOST circle was now really definitely starting to close at last, and that various loose ends especially from this season (Ajira products on the Island, Dan in the DHARMA Initiative, the very nature of Christian and what it means for Locke) were finally beginning to be tied up.

Also loved the other parallels between Ajira 316 and Oceanic 815 (Locke and Christian aside). I also believe Frank will be eaten by the Monster.

Of course, there are other questions thrown up: what happened to Ben before Flight 316 took off? How did Sayid and Hugo get on board? Where the HELL is Aaron? Who was Sayid's escort? What about that shifty-looking Asian guy? And how will the Island deal with Desmond?

While I remain resolutely spoiler-free, I'm intrigued over whether the O6's presence in the Island's past (also hinted by Jin in DHARMA gear) will help explain Dan's presence in DHARMA (and his relationship with little Charlotte).... and even finally reveal who Adam and Eve are? (I still think it's Rose and Bernard. )

One thing's for sure: when we do find out, I certainly wouldn't Adam and Eve it!

We need some Cock-Er-Nees in the show just so they can become Adam and Eve so that we won't Adam and Eve it when we find out it's them who's brown bread.

Yes.
