Pike the hero?

Ok, probably not going to happen...

But considering this is based after the Cage, I would really love this movie to have Pike be the hero in the end. Making the ultimate sacrifice to save everything and beign reduced to that....life-support machine-thing we see him in later.

I mean...Pike is the Enterprises first captain onscreen...he needs the glory in this film.

Re: Pike the hero?

Like I mentioned in the Trek XI news thread, I have a strong suspicion he will be. It makes sense, since Pike has to clear the way for Kirk. I mean, J.J. could have bypassed Pike by making him a footnote in the movie, but he seems to have made Pike a formative character, so I get the feeling that Pike will have a major role in this movie. I, for one, will be glad, as Bruce Greenwood's Pike makes me really want to see this man be a hero.

I think that Pike very likely will be a hero in the film -- the shot in the trailer of the Enterprise viewscreen as they drop out of warp into the middle of the wreckage of the Vulcan fleet pretty clearly says that he's not out for a walk in the park, and there's his important influence on the career path of one young James Kirk to consider, besides -- but I very much doubt that we'll see his crippling exposure to delta radiation here, as that is supposed to take place only a short time before the events seen in the TOS episode "The Menagerie" and has been stated to take place aboard a training ship, not the Enterprise. Yes, it's a part of Pike's story, but because that accident takes place (we presume) a number of years after the bulk of the story told in this movie, it doesn't seem as if it belongs stuffed in here as a footnote.

ahhhh yes, but then the timeline has been altered in this film . so that will allow jj to take liberties with pikes character and he very well may be crippled or even killed in this film.

I think it'll shock everyone when Kirk dies and the movie ends with Pike in the chair.

I hope this movie will give justice to Captain Pike. I hope he doesn't die in this movie but rather gives its command to Kirk at the end of the movie..
I think going back to TOS crew when they were in their prime is cool and i like it. However my biggest worries besides time travel aspects is that we are going to have seen that done that feeling after we watch it, smilier to Superman Returns.
Now this start me thinking if Abrams & co had different approach f.e. make XI a Captain Pike movie. Before Kirk, There was Pike.
We would have Pike & crew(that include Spock as science officer and maybe Scotty as chief engineering officer). It would have completely different feel to it, something new plus having 2 old ones(Scotty & Spock) we all love..

Re: Pike the hero?

In the movie it seems after Kirk's father died Pike became the father figure in his life. In the original timeline they only met once during Pike's promotion to Fleet Captain that probably occurred around the time Kirk took command of the Enterprise in 2264.

In the movie he looks to be in Iowa from time to time checking up on both of them which is already a significant divergence, the Narada incident might even stop the Rigel mission from happening and possibly the Talos mission as well. Pike doesn't see his crew slaughtered by the Rigel incident, no doubts about his command = very different path in life.

It would be a little cliche, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pike dies as the father figure type character for Kirk as he is dying or because of his death, Kirk becomes captain...

What's also strange is that - with the exception of Scotty - the entire senior staff of the TOS-Enterprise seems to have served under Pike. Yet, in "The Menagerie" only Spock seemed to know him personally.

Nah.

Pike, Kirk, and Spock all die, and Uhura ends up in the center seat. (Scotty is passed over because he thinks of catastrophic danger as "exciting".)

It might be more accurate to say that only Spock knew him well, by virtue of having served with him longer, but even that is merely speculation. We know that Spock served under Pike for "eleven years, four months, five days"... and (with the possible exception of Kirk, whose place in this question is as yet a bit unclear) canon tells us nothing at all about whether any of the others did or did not, and if so, for how long. Even the business about Pike's promotion to Fleet Captain transpiring at or around the same time as the transfer to Kirk of command of the Enterprise is only conjecture, because that is never explicitly stated to be so on-screen.
