Alternate TNG?

This thread was inspired by that unusual Farscape ep where they show several alternate universes where the characters were completely mixed up, where Claudia Black was Chiana, for example.

Just for the hell of it, if there were ever a sequel to Parallels, I'd love to see the TNG characters completely switch around roles -- not direct swaps in all cases.

My alternate crew would be:

Captain Beverly Howard, Commanding Officer -- Like our Picard, was captain of the Stargazer. Never meets and marries Jack Crusher and (yay!) there's no Wesley.

Commander Data, First Officer -- This Data has a better understanding of human complexity, and his quest to be more human includes being on the command track.

Geordi La Forge, Ship's Counselor -- His visor helps him treat his patients.

Dr. Jean-Luc Picard, Chief Medical Officer -- Combines his love of archaeology so he's not only a top surgeon but is as revered as Dr. Roger Korby in the field of archaeological medicine.

Lieutenant Commander Worf, Second Officer and Operations Manager -- Channels his warrior fierceness into more rational endeavors.

Lieutenant Commander William Riker, Chief Engineer -- Our bearded rogue is a whiz with engines and the ladies!

Lieutenant Deanna Troi, Security Chief -- Has learned to shield her empathic nature to deal with threats.

Lieutenant Tasha Yar, Helm Officer -- Her violent upbringing is channeled into the command path.

I'd also mix up romantic pairings, hooking up Riker and Yar, and Picard with Troi. Make Captain Howard a female Casanova, too!

So go crazy and really mix things up if you want, like making Worf the CMO or Riker the counselor!

Just to get off-topic for a split-second, can you post the name of that 'Farscape' episode? (I couldn't really get into the show, but that episode sounds interesting).

I seem to recall a poster doing a photoshoped photo of Crusher, Yar and Troi with Beverly in command wine.

Merry Miss Nguyen:

I did some digging, and I believe the name of the ep is Unrealized Reality. It's a confusing but excellent ep that shows the dangers of wormhole travel involve not only arriving at different points in space, but time, and alternate realities. Below is a URL with a list of Farscape eps from TV.com:

Have you ever seen "Parallels"? While not quite as crazy as some of the things you're suggesting, you do at least get to see the captain, first officer, and a few other positions shift around.

Re: Alternate TNG?

I tried to keep it plausible by giving explanations for each change:

Capt. Miles O'Brien - Commanding officer (instead of becoming a non-commissioned officer, O'Brien graduated from Starfleet Academy and started a career in the command division; after he had successfully captained the USS Rutledge during the Federation-Cardassian War, he was made commander of the Enterprise-D)

Cmdr. Beverly Crusher - First officer (Beverly Crusher was a medical officer who had already passed the Bridge Officer's Test, when her captain, first officer and second officer were killed during a Tholian sneak attack; she was forced to take command of her ship and managed to repel the Tholians; following this experience she became interested in pursuing a command career)

Lt. Cmdr. Jean-Luc Picard - Operations manager (because of his affinity for archeology, Picard opted to join the Science department instead of going for the command track; he rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to the post of Operations manager on board the Enterprise-D)

Lt. Cmdr. Deanna Troi - Chief engineer (Deanna's father didn't die when she was young and as a result she became interested in other fields than psychology)

Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge - Chief medical officer (Geordi's career choiche was also changed because of his family, in this timeline he let himself inspire more by his father instead of his mother; after having played around with the idea of becoming a biologist for a while, he started to study medicine at Starfleet Academy; his VISOR made him an excellent surgeon)

Lt. Cmdr. Data - Ship's counselor (having always been quipped with an emotion chip since he was first activated, Data is considered an expert for humanoid behavior)

Lt. William Riker - Security chief (in this timeline, Edward Jellico was captain of the USS Hood instead of Robert DeSoto; when Riker refused to let Jellico go on a dangerous away mission, his captain had him court-martialed and demoted; this event damaged Riker's career and therefore he still holds the rank of Lieutenant)

Lt. Worf - Conn officer (no elaborate explanation here, Worf served as some sort of "deputy conn officer" in TNG's first season and since Riker is in charge of security and Geordi was never a helmsman in the first place, Worf has always been the chief conn officer of the Enterprise-D; and he was a member of the command division in our timeline's DS9, so it seems to fit)

Yes, Parallels is one of my fave eps. I enjoyed the shifts, esp. since in one of those quantum realities. Alyssa Ogawa was CMO. -- RR

Pretty neat!

I enjoyed it because we got to see a Cardassian in Starfleet. That RULED.

Re: Alternate TNG?

A universe where the Romulans worked with the Federation and the Klingons to defeat the Borg, with Admiral Jarok in charge of the Romulan contingent and the Klingons sending not only K'Vort class cruisers but their new Vor'cha class ship under K'mpec himself. The pivotal point would be that Q never introduced the Enterprise-D crew to the Borg at J-25. By diverting Borg interest away from the Neutral Zone, Q removed a powerful incentive for the Romulans to work with the Federation.

Re: Alternate TNG?

Ensign Redshirt, I liked your explanations for your alternate crew. I always thought O'Brien could've been in the command division, too. And Riker busted by Jellico was a nice tip of the hat to Chain of Command.

Robert Treat, the idea that Q messed up a rapprochement with the Romulans by sending the Enterprise to meet the Borg in Q Who is an interesting idea! Perhaps it's all part of the Q's master plan for humanity. While not exactly on topic, it is an alternate milieu for the TNG crew.

The rest of the continuum probably wasn't too crazy about what Q did, as they stripped him of his powers--and clothing--in the next Q episode.

Re: Alternate TNG?

Here's my take:

Captain: Captain Thomas Halloway. The officer who oversaw the construction of the Enterprise-D at Utopia Plantitia Fleet Yards, his wife declined to join him onboard when he accepted command, and they parted ways. As a recent bachelor, he is determined to enjoy all that the bachelor life has to offer, within reason, and as an engineer, he is as likely to be found in Main Engineering or working on some other engineering project, while delegating heavily to his bridge crew, as he is to be found on the bridge.

First Officer: Cmdr Elizabeth Shelby. Upon realizing that he was delegated to effectively commanding the ship a good bit of the time, and unhappy with his captain's command style, William Riker accepted the first offer for his own captaincy that came along. (Troi followed shortly after.) Which left way for Cmdr. Shelby, who is a bit junior in her rank as Cmdr, and more than happy to exercise the authority that Captain Halloway frequently leaves her with.

Ship's Computer: Data. Without Captain Picard's eloquent defense in "The Measure Of A Man", Lt. Cmdr. Data was found to be property, and confiscated. Before his body could be removed from the ship, though, Lt. La Forge transferred him into the only other computer available that was able to contain him: the main ship's computer.

Ops: Lt. Geordi La Forge. Data actually handles Ops, but Geordi handles Data, as Data consults with him regarding the human elements of coordinating Ops. Geordi and Data, along with Chief Engineer Brahms, are also looking for ways restore Data into a body of his own.

Ship's Counselor: Lt. Cmdr. Guinan. Ever since events occurred in the 19th century on Earth that involved Samuel Clemens, Jack London, and Guinan overcoming an alien menace, she has felt that things have gone increasingly .... wrong, somehow. When she found that her fate had once again crossed with humans during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B, and that her sense of wrongness was stronger than ever after her exposure to the Nexus, she ended up entangled in the activities of Section 31, a secret organization within Starfleet dedicated to, amongst other things, the study of changes in the timeline due to temporal phenomenon.

Helm: Lt. Cmdr. Sela. A Section 31 strike team guided by Guinan managed to recover the survivors of the Enterprise-C shortly after Tasha Yar gave birth to her daughter. Sela has followed in her mother's footsteps in more than one way, but she has more of an aptitude for navigation than security, and is on the command track as well. (Unknown to Sela, her mother has become a Section 31 operative.)

Chief Engineer: Lt. Cmdr. Leah Brahms. After her husband's murder during her involvement with the recovery of the Genesis Project information, which had been stolen by rogue Klingons (and which happened earlier in this reality than in the novels that tell a similar story), Dr. Brahms threw herself completely into her work in Warp Physics, and accepted a commission in Starfleet. She has reluctant feelings for Geordi La Forge, but denies them out of a sense of loyalty to her deceased husband.

Security, 2nd Officer: Lt. Cmdr Worf. After his recovery from the Khitomer massacre, Worf's adopted parents, the Rozhenkos, neglected his Klingon heritage in favor of instilling their own strong, Jewish family values in him. This lead to an easier time for him in dealing with humans, including his superiors, and his willingness to use his appearance in Black Ops also contributed to his more rapid rise through the ranks. He is on the Command track, and he is the only person aboard the Enterprise who knows of Guinan's Section 31 affiliation.

CMO: Dr. Leonard McCoy. No shuttlecraft was available that would allow Admiral McCoy to see the Enterprise-D on the necessary schedule before she broke orbit, so for what he believed would be the last time in his 137 year long life, he used the transporter to beam aboard, and there was an accident. An uncontained molecular inversion field in a lab near the transporter room resulted in an age reversal, leaving a 12 year old McCoy on the platform. The crew discovers a way to reverse the process, but McCoy declines, and uses contacts at Starfleet to preempt the intended Doctor as the ship's CMO. His knowledge and contacts occasionally come in handy for the crew, even if his appearance and behavior - that of a much older man - is frequently disconcerting.

Astrophysics: Ensign Picard was never a risk-taker, ever since he declined a bar fight with Nausicaans at the Academy. But sometimes he just seems to know things, and to be in the right place at the right time, and neither he nor anybody else knows why. Except maybe Guinan, but she doesn't know what to do about it.
