Ricardo Montalban Passes Away

Ricardo Montalban, who played bad guy Khan on both the Original Series and in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, passed away Wednesday at the age of 88.

According to the AP obituary, Montalban died "from complications of advancing age." He is survived by two daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren.

Montalban appeared in the Original Series episode "Space Seed" as Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically enhanced human who ruled much of Earth as a dictator during the Eugenics Wars. The role proved to be so popular that Montalban returned to play the main villain in the second theatrical Trek film, The Wrath of Khan.

Beyond Trek, Montalban was best known for appearing on Fantasy Island. In that show, which ran from 1978 to 1984, Montalban played Mr. Roarke, the host of a tropical island resort where visitors were able to fulfill their lifelong dreams. In recent years, he appeared in the Spy Kids trilogy of films, and voiced several characters in animated films.

For more on Montalban's passing, head over to the original report from the AP.

Wonderful actor who bought a lot to my favourite movie.

His voice was so nice I used to get up early on Saturdays so I could listen to him do informercials for the Cross of the Nativity.

The very first thing I saw Ricardo in was Escape from the Planet of the Apes. It was only later that I glommed onto Trek reruns and finally saw him as Khan.

He will be greatly missed.

sad loss indeed, he'll be greatly missed by us all, his role in The Wrath of Khan, is hard to reprise or repeat.

RIP Mr Khan

Re: Ricardo Montalban Passes Away

A great man and a great actor has left us. I'll never forget reading a report of a US in-store signing which Montalban did to promote the release of TWOK on DVD back in about 2001. There were quite a few fans there in full TWOK era Starfleet uniform, and when RM arrived and saw them, he apparently smiled, opened his arms wide, and said My people!

It's such a shame that his physical frailties stopped him from travelling in his later years. I'd have loved to have met him.

RIP Ricardo

Re: Ricardo Montalban Passes Away

::::

I was a fan of Fantasy Island before I'd seen a whole of Star Trek. I had seen Space Seed in reruns after the show had been on a couple of years and was overjoyed when I heard that he would reprise the role for TWOK.

Kahn was a wonderful character. I was actually sad to see him die at the end, although the way the character had evolved it was inevitable.

Yet another big loss. Trek is losing it's soul.

He was a bad dude. A rare type of slot actor that makes every script he did seem like they wrote for HIM.
