This was when the project was still in development at Paramount, with Harry Knowles of AICN coming aboard as one of the producers.
Ugh, it's bad enough having a Knowles quote on the cover of the Blu-Ray for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Glad he hasn't been able to get in the business producing movies.

I don't know why they don't just call it Princess Of Mars.

The trailer didn't overly excite me, but it didn't turn me off, either. There are some interesting images in there.

There are far weirder Mars images than that.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

And there's more where those came from.

Knowing nothing about the source material, Princess of Mars sounds like a movie trying to appeal to young girls, and was probably rejected for that reason.

Princess of Mars
A Disney film
Yeah, how could there possibly be a misunderstanding?

Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White tackle the Martian Terrain.

Surprisingly good trailer, for something that seems to be aimed at the Twilight crowd.

They might as well do what Avatar did, and make the "love interest" the defacto lead to compensate for the blandness of the male lead. A billion dollar box office can't be wrong!

Plus which, it was the title of the book.

Doesn't matter. As others have pointed out, a Disney film with the word "Princess" in the title sends all the wrong marketing signals . . .

And "Mars," arguably, sounds old-fashioned and corny these days. Like Marvin the Martian or My Favorite Martian or "Mars Needs Women."

They should just call it "Barsoom" and be done with it.

But then what the hell is Barsoom? There's a word with all the meaning (to our dear public) of Kwyjibo.

The Harry Potter crowd, rather.* Stanton name-checked the Barsoom series as his Harry Potter, after all. The film does not look like it's the kind of thing aimed primarily at girls - hence, as observed, why it's not being called 'Princess of Mars.'

True enough, but hey, Olympus Mons, no?

*I say Harry Potter, but Pirates of the Carribbean may be a better example.

It seems a bit genteel and mannered for what I always imagined at least. That odd track they're playing probably didn't help that impression. They seem to be playing up the romantic angle for the marketing.

There's isn't a lot of exposure for the Martians, I don't know if they're trying to keep suspense or if they're trying to sweep them under the rug but it'll be interesting once they come out of the woodwork.

.

Good point. To be honest, I'm not sure what they should title it.

And, yeah, I don't know where people are getting a Twilight vibe, aside from the fact that there appears to be a romantic subplot between two attractive young leads--and doesn't that apply to pretty much every blockbuster?

It looked like a sci-fi action movie to me, not a soap teen romance. And I was pleasantly surprised that it seemed to be a period piece.

My one complaint is that it didn't look quite exotic enough for my tastes. Lots of rocky desert landscapes, but I wasn't really getting a strong unearthly vibe . . . .

maybe they should have called it, Under The Moons of Mars, which was the original title of the story.

They seem to want to avoid the word "Mars" as well.

Maybe they should just call it BLADE RUNNER . . . .

(Hey, it worked before. Sort of.)

Marvel Comics is doing an adaptation of the first novel, and they're calling it, I kid you not, John Carter: A Princess of Mars.
