True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

Bill and Eric must barter with the head of the Vampire Authority for their lives; Sookie asks for Pam's help; Andy gets a visit from Gordon and Barbara Pelt; Jason reunites with his former high school teacher.
More Pam! More Pam! Yay!

And if Jason's a teacher, who wants to bet he slept with her?

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

Not quite a classic episode, though there were some good moments.

Steve is the new Nan Flannigan? Not buying it.

Jason and his teacher ... So now we're supposed to blame Jason and his promiscuous ways on a teacher, and not on his faery blood?

Tara and Sam were cute. Sam really will give the shirt off his back to anybody in need - human or otherwise.

Since when do vampires dream? They're dead during the day. Hence the title of the first book - Dead Until Dark. Now, five years in, we're finding out they dream? wtf?

wtf was up with Claude, flirting with the cashier? He doesn't like girls. At all. Not even a little bit. The only girl he can tolerate is Sookie, and that's because she's family.

Pam as a human showed remarkable strength. At the same time, she forced Eric's hand, forced him to become her maker. Speaking of, that whole little plotline/dream sure felt ripped from the Buffy/Angel cross-over two-parter with Spike, Angel, Dru, and Darla. Isn't it convenient that they all know each other and all four spent time together in the same room 100 years ago? My, what a small world.

Semi-amusing line: "I remember everything you ever taught me" - Jason

Actual amusing line - "You stupid bitch" - Pam, to her daughter Tara. Please let Tara be gone after this!

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

Nan Flanigan was a tool, Steve Newlin is an uebertool, it's the one thing in this I did buy. Although I wish I could have believed that Sookie is getting a clue about not being perfect, they gave her a free ride with Alcide. Or maybe the actor just didn't quite nail it? Similarly, the backstory for Pam was pretty interesting (saw one episode of Buffy) but I couldn't buy Skargaard rolling over. Condescending maybe but not rolling over.

After Jessica smells Claude, she runs to Jason and even announces that she was somehow reminded of Jason by smelling Claude. It seems doubtful they'll go anyplace with this. Sookie was born special and screw genetics if that means Jason is anything but the slut sister Sensibility to Sookie's Sense. (Sookie only sleeps with someone because she is overpowered by True Love, and maybe not then, which makes her the sensible one. Have I said this show is actually very badly written?) In the books and the series, Sookie was molested by the great uncle. If they really had to drag in an apology for Jason's sex life, they could have used that one.

Oh, wait, that would involve Sookie thinking about Jason sympathetically. Jason is the shadow against which Sookie's glory shines ever more brightly. So they couldn't have that.

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

I didn't watch last week, but gave it a try again last night by "other means." Better than episode 1, granted, but I have a tough time believing TPTB will sustain a thoughtful storyline throughout the season. I always end up disappointed. Hard to believe that Eric, 900 year old vampire, would suddenly feel sorry for some madame he'd just met and screwed in 1905 San Francisco. Why didn't he just let her bleed out? He's supposed to be some bad ass, heartless vampire with the only exception being his feelings for Godric.

Jason was abused by his teacher, who was Don Draper's special lady friend on Mad Men? Riiiiiight. That's the reason, not his fae blood. Only Sookie can be the mighty and special fairy.

Tara and Sam are cute. Any scene Trammel is in is better because of it. He'd be better off with crazy vampire Tara than that disloyal I don't want to see you anymore because you dared to mention my child Luna. Was she serious? I thought she was supposed to be in love with him. What a tool.

I'm really liking how this season is shaping up compared to last season! Love the backstory with Eric and Pam.

Did anybody else catch the nod to the novels? Steve talk about people believing anything and talks about an Elvis sighting - in the novels Elvis is a fucktarded vampire.

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

Man, hardly anybody comments on these anymore.

This was better than last week, although I hope Tara has a more interesting arc this season than simply learning to accept her new unlife.

Eric sucks, Eric sucks, Eric sucks. Did I mention that Eric sucks? When the naked chancellor (whose name I forget) was trying to woo him, it was funny how she described in him all these qualities that he frankly lacked. Oh yeah, Eric is so brooding and mysterious and deep and hiding so much pain.

The whole bit with Jason's teacher seemed kind of pointless. It's not like this is the first time Jason has realized sex ruins his life. This is, what, his second or third time having this revelation? By the end of the season, I'm sure he'll be back to fucking half of Bon Temps again...

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

This is why I've become addicted to Game of Thrones on "other means." I'd never seen it and don't have HBO, cannot afford it, yada yada yada. I've finished the first season. HOLY COW!! Do its writers know how to thread together coherent storyline or what? And follow through to boot. And yet, for its large cast there aren't as many separate storyline attempts as there are in True Blood, in which most get short shrift. There are 3 basic story areas in GOT, all characters woven in.

Them not being afraid to kill off a major character was a big "wow" moment for me, thought I'd been (unfortunately) accidentally spoiled that a major character would die. Season one's last shot of
had my jaw dropping open. GOT knows how to write women. The acting is off the charts superior to True Blood.

On True Blood we get rinse lather repeat, Jason finds out why he's fucked up sexually yet again, the Authority is the new big bad....but will any of it amount to a coherent story that builds through the season? I doubt it. You're right. Skaarsgard sucks. Kwanten, however, doesn't. I saw him in an episode of L&O:SVU in which he played a marine. Nothing different about his appearance, but I didn't even recognize him for the longest time. His voice, the way he carried himself, everything was different. Strikingly different persona. Kwanten's a better actor than he's given an opportunity to show. Trammel's still head and shoulders the best. AS, sucks. No way to sugar coat it. Brooding constantly isn't acting. When he has to show any range, he can't.

Sadly i agree about Skarsgard.. he was awesome when he was this one dimensional, evil Vampire Sheriff in season 1 and 2 but as soon as they expanded his scope, background and character and he became one of the main characters it became apparent that Skarsgard just can't deliver.. the worst was last season when he lost his memory and became all lovey dovey with Sookie.. i wanted to puke!

Currently it is quite interesting.. not as mind blowing as season 1 but a steady good quality with actors who have settled in their roles.
True Blood is still overcrowded with characters.. at least a third could be cut with no problem and i think it would do the show some good giving more storytime to the main plots.

Well.. it's just 42 minutes a week to invest.. not too much to ask for (and it still makes me very uncomfortable when my mom is visiting and i have True Blood on.. i just can't watch naked women and sexy scenes when she's around )

Not sure what that's about. It could be that people have given up on the series, or that they're waiting for the DVD release to mainline the season, or my various and sundry haters don't want to post to one of my threads. Could be any or all.

Re: True Blood 5.03 - "Whatever I Am, You Made Me"

I agree that there are too many characters. What good are these characters to the show anymore?

* Andy
* Terry
* Arlene
* Tara
* Hoyt
* Hoyt's Mom
* Alcide

Even Jason doesn't have too much of a purpose these days, besides playing out the same character arc over and over. Jessica remains fairly interesting. Bill was sorta interesting as the King, but that played out pretty quickly and now doesn't seem to mean anything. They seem to be trying to develop Pam more, but I'm skeptical as to whether it will amount to anything (I suspect not.)

Lafayette is apparently going to do random psycho shaman shit this season, which could be fun.

This show works best when it plays up its B-movie tropes and over-the-top melodrama. Lots of sex, lots of violence, lots of absurd situations. The worst crime this show can commit is to be boring.
