IIRC, GR had to fight the studio to keep that from happening.
That would be the network, and that's according to Gene Roddenberry.

For a more balanced and realistic view of the relationship between DesiLu and NBC than Roddenberry was willing or capable of describing, see "Inside Star Trek" by Solow and Justman.

Re: Alcoholics in space?

Seriously, how often did this supposed drinking take place? And in the Tholian Web Scotty doesn't say he's off to get drunk, just will let McCoy if the drug makes a good mix with Scotch.

I swear, people overinflate these things...

And, seriously, did you see people lighting up in Lost in Space? It's not like every show out there had people smoking all the time. By 1966 all those health claims about cigs were off the air, and unless Star Trek's sponsors were cigarette companies, then likely there'd have been zero pressure to put them in the show.

Doesn't really matter.

There's no way around the "By Any Other Name" thing, except to acknowledge that the tone of the episode was light in the second half (what with Kirk having lines like "I'm stimulating him!" in the middle of a fist fight) and drunkeness was a common comedic fallback in those days.

^Hell, drinking is still somewhat en vogue on television and film; after all, it gives the actors something to do with their hands in a scene.
That's not a problem in porn movies.
Oh, yeah!

Try watching 10 minutes of 1970's UFO. You'll se more drinking and smoking than a Vegas casino. But UFO was British afterall...

What is the deal with the crew of the USS Enterprise loving booze so much?

I am reading the comics from IDW and the crew are always saying things like "If we get out of here alive, I'll get you a fine scotch!" or something similar.
It's what normal people used to do before the 80s went and got everything pussified.

You're completely mistaken, and your assumptions about "normal" behavior are rather more descriptive of pathology.

But, Scotty as an alcoholic? I'd be curious to know why he would go that way.
A genetic predisposition to alcoholism compounded by Starfleet assigning the engineer to administrative and/or R&D duties in some groundside laboratory after he spent five years exploring the galaxy with all the wonder and terror it contains? GR actually touched upon the latter in his 1977 Star Trek: Phase II Writers' Guide ("Series Bible"):

"Few starships have ever completed a five-year mission, and none but the U.S.S. Enterprise has returned with its original crew virtually intact. Perhaps the explanation for so many of the crew volunteering for a second five years was their seeking the relative anonymity of space. Or perhaps these men or women cannot find the satisfaction in an ordinary life after so many years of the highest adventure experienced by humans."

Yes, it does, since the subject is apparently about all the drinking that supposedly goes on in TOS, but the notable aberration of "By Any other Name" is an exception, not a rule.

To the extent that the subject is indeed "alcoholics in space" the frequency of the drinking is irrelevant. Scotty's behavior and attitudes in several instances qualify as alcoholic.

I see the same thing on DS9 where they are always bargaining Barrels of Blood wine or Kannar.

I imagine that flying a starship under the influence could result in something much worse than a DUI. I remember seeing Jadzia with a hang over. They haven't invented something to cure it yet?

What about other drugs in the future besides alcohol? No marijuana type substances? I am sure it will be legalized here some time in the near future, is it banned again in the future?

Just wanted to discuss this but if this is not the correct forum, feel free to move it.
No one likes a teetotaler. So Jadzia was hungover. Go aboard any US Navy vessel the day she's leaving port and count the number of hungover sailors you see.

I don't think you understand what the term 'alcoholic' actually means.

You are entirely mistaken.

If you think that such problems have anything to do with frequency of consumption, you don't understand alcoholism or alcohol abuse.

I do know that getting drunk once or twice is not alcoholism.
