What ship do we have in Exeter that looks anything like the "Jellyfish"?

I'm not being charitable in the least; Paramount sure doesn't need it.

Exactly. Except that the "cattle prods" they used were their bland, boring and baseless proclamations. That was enough.

Oh wait, that was the House...

Re: "Polaris"

Well, guys.... I don't know if it was "borrowed" or not, but I think it is interesting that the story points are similar. It's easy for anyone to borrow those ideas because they're not protected. I offer one question. Why didn't they just totally re-invent Star Trek? They could have easilly avoided all the bitching and whining from the hard-core fans and just taken the brand and concepts and tailored them for what they percieve as todays audience. I offer Wolverine, Transformers, and Twilight as examples of the kind of movie style is popular now. They didn't really need Nimoy. They really didn't need to emulated the TOS uniforms. They didn't really need to have the same characters and names. They didn't need to design the ship similarly to the original or call her Enterprise. So, why did they? I don't know.... At anyrate, I wish they had done that.

As for the namesake of this thread...Polaris looks dang kewl. I am excited to see where you intend to take it Dennis. Oh, and DS9Sega, the short that you linked to recently was great. Loved it.

Re: "Polaris"

I just posted an updated set of sketches for the Polaris on my Website.

Also, far be it from me to dictate the conversation in somebody else's thread, but maybe the discussion about what Paramount did or did not rip off would be better left to the multitude of other threads that have been taken over by that and similar topics.

Just sayin'.

Cool stuff, Vektor, but all the detail is starting to make the craft look to SFX "now" for my taste. Too busy.

The thing with fan productions, though, is you're using someone's intellectual property, and probably forgo the right to sue if the property owners like your ideas and end up using them.

As far as the new Polaris. Like it. The folded sails version is probably the best looking so far. The deployed version is cool too, and best used as described, a short FX sequence before jumping to ftl.

In fact, we have no rights where Star Trek is concerned. They can put an end to all of us tomorrow with a C&D letter.

But Polaris isn't Star Trek I thought? Isn't that point? so you can retain full copywrite control over your product. Some parts may look similar to Star Trek but as mentioned in the other thread, alot of Scfi looks similar to something else to tradmark accusation have to be pretty conclusive.

Look at 'The Asylum' film studio they make films that are very similar in plot and name (The Terminators, Transmorphers) to popular to scifi favorites and sell alot of the them on DVD and to the Syfy channel.

I was wearing my Exeter hat.

Yeah, it gets confusing in here.

Polaris is to Star Trek as Trek is to Forbidden Planet, or Babylon 5, or Battlestar Galactica or the Stargate shows or half a dozen other things - it's another space opera show.

That DOES happen in Space Opera, right?

Musical or not, looking forward to Polaris.

Speaking of "real perty" - and talented...

Susan Cirrincione will play Lieutenant Commander January Howard in Polaris.

Susan has combined a career as a model with acting assignments that include television dramas “The Kill Point” and the pilot for “Three Rivers” as well as upcoming features “She’s Out of My League” (Dreamworks) and “Love and Other Drugs” (20th Century Fox). Other recent appearances include national commercials for brands like Mercedes-Benz and participation in the “Visit Pittsburgh” tourism campaign for her home town.

The full casting announcement is here.

A couple of new construction images:

The fellow operating those invisible control panels (they're going to be delivered on Tuesday) and wielding the hammer is our indispensible construction supervisor Doug Caprette.

Here's a design sketch of the Command Deck - details of the final set continue to evolve.
