Veterans' Day

To my United Trek brethren, I know I probably should have run this by you first, but the mood struck me. I hope I didn't do the lame duck too much damage...

Here is a very short vignette from President Santiago for Veterans Day

Thank you to everyone that has served in the Armed Forces.

-------------------------------------------------------

Office of the President of the United Federation of Planets
Palais de la Concorde
Paris, Earth
Stardate 53861.9 (November 11, 2376)

President Santiago looked at himself in the mirror and smiled. He looked as good as he was going to get. The cameras were already set for his speech which would go out live across the Federation and no doubt to the Federation’s allies and enemies alike and for the first time in years he just didn’t care. This was something dear to his heart and even a year after the cessation of hostilities with the Dominion, it was raw to a lot of people, Starfleet and civilian alike. He believed that they should be remembered and that was what he was going to do today.

Logan nodded to him to indicate that he had just been announced and he stepped into frame.

‘Ladies, gentlemen, and transgendered species of the Federation, in a tradition stretching back several hundred years on Earth, the men and women of the armed forces were remembered on this day every year and I wanted to continue that tradition. This may be my last address to you as President, but this is close to my heart and I wanted you all to know that I care.

‘To the men and women in Starfleet, thank you for your dedication to the Federation and the freedom for which it stands. To the family of those who did not come home, we feel what you feel and we grieve with you every day. I know many of you lost someone you loved, more than one I’m certain, but know this. The Federation does not forget its heroes and today they have a place to be remembered. With the blessing of the President and residents of the planet Babel, we will be building a permanent memorial to those who have lost their lives and those who still serve, so that we may be free from tyranny and fight against those that oppose freedom.

‘A little over one year ago, we ended a war with the Dominion but we did not win. It was a pyrrhic victory and we lost millions of lives in that conflict, enemy and ally alike. If we learn anything from that, it is that we must reach out a hand of friendship to everyone. Some will turn us away but those that shake our hands will be our friends, and you can never have too many friends.

‘These words were said hundreds of years ago but they are still relevant today. All gave some….some gave all.
To all those who gave and are still giving, thank you.’

Once the cameras went dark, Logan clasped his hand and said simply, ‘you might just win this with speeches like that. I don’t know where you dragged that up from, but I think it will put us ahead.’

Santiago didn’t care that there important people in the room, he was just fed up of the weasel he couldn’t get rid of, and he just punched the man, once. Logan hit the floor like a sack of potatoes as Santiago returned to his desk.

‘What’s next?’

Nice one and perfectly topical. Also packed a punch. (Pun intended)

Indeed. Here's to all who are willing to risk their lives for us others. To everyone in the Armed Forces. Nationality aside.

And also, Here's to you, Andy. (1975-2008)

Re: Veterans' Day

Thanks guys.

I might not be an American yet, but I have always had the greatest respect for the armed forces regardless of nationality. I wanted to have a Star Trek version of a Veterans' Day speech.

Glad you liked it.

Re: Veterans' Day

Thank you, BrotherBenny. I recently learned that if you add up all living veterans and those currently serving, it's still only 5% of the US population. They deserve all the thanks and support they can get.

Great work, BrotherBenny! Santiago was a wartime president, a rarity for the Federation, and as such bears a special burden for the lives of those men, women, and non-gendered individuals who sacrificed so much in defense of the Federation.

I know the crew of Gibraltar would have appreciated the sentiment.
