Actually they said a couple of days ago in irc that you can make an Excelsior-class in the Tier 1 Cruiser set. Just as you can make the Steamrunner-class in the Tier 2 Escort set.

Should also mention that they'll also be a total of sixteen basic configurations for the Federation.

How many configurations for the Klingons, dammit? It'll suck if they artificially create a player imbalance between the races due to lack of variety for Klingons.

I'm kinda wondering if the Constitution may be a typo and they meant Excelsior since we already have a Constitution like ship (Excalibur).

Bit more than a typo.

Though I'm not sure myself, I've seen in a demo video at some show the ST:O crew were at, and in showing a batch of ship 'skins' we see a refit Constitution class there, so I don't know if this is just a 'skin' of the Excalibur class, or a separate class in it's own right.

It's a separate class according to their recently released Federation ship list:

http://www.startrekonline.com/ships

It had been mentioned that the difference between each type within a tier is based on what type of bridge stations they're outfitted with.

However if you feel you need to upgrade from let's say, a Constitution to a Vesper-class because it has a better load out, but you still want your ship to look like a Constitution then you can alter its appearance.

Thanks for posting this! I found it to be a "fascinating" read. (sorry) Anyway, based on what I read here, I'm really excited about this game.

Well check this out - the new trailer, from the Klingon perspective, clearly shows what appears to be a Connie....

A JJverse Connie, that is.

Can you say, "Paramount-dictated retconning of the Prime Universe?" I knew you could!

Yeah, that was mentioned to be in based on reports back from PAX last month. You'll also notice that the ship has the TMP-style warp engines on it, essentially the three ship classes they've listed within each tier display a very small fraction of the customizable pieces that you can swap out.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that the ship looked the like the Enterprise from the most recent film. Still looked pretty good.

The more I see of this game, the more interested I become in possibly getting it.
