New 'Star Trek XI' Trailer Debuts

Fans who like both James Bond movies and Star Trek got a double treat when the new Star Trek XI trailer was shown with Quantum of Solace, the new Bond movie, except in some cases where the trailer wasn't shown with the movie, to the disappointment of some fans.

As reported by SyFy Portal, some fans who went to midnight showings of Quantum of Solace were disappointed when the expected Star Trek XI trailer wasn't show along with the latest James Bond flick. According to Sy Fy Portal, only about three-fourths of the prints delivered to theaters have the trailer attached. "Many theater owners are mixing and matching which trailers they shove in front of 'Quantum,'" said Josh Tyler of Cinema Blend.

"This is particularly important since Paramount has refused to release the trailer online," said Tyler. "They're holding it gripped tight in their fists until Monday, which means plenty of people are out there heading to see the latest Bond movie in part of in full because they can't wait to see the trailer."

Indeed, fans are eager to see the trailer, if online fan reaction is any indication. "I'm heading to the midnight showing tonight," said TrekBBS poster weekendbiggs. "I'm so excited it isn't funny." Poster seigezunt "Just bought tickets for the Sunday night showing. I love James Bond movies, but haven't seen them in years."

Quantum of Solace, with Daniel Craig as 007, is a sequel to 2006's Casino Royale. In Quantum of Solace, Bond battles a member of the Quantum terrorist organization posing as an environmentalist who intends to take control of a country's water supply.

Some fans have already seen both the trailer and the movie. According to TrekBBS poster Starship Polaris, "Nothing about this, though, looks like any previous "Star Trek" movie. There's quite a sweep to it. If the trailer is any indication, it would have been really strange to have this called "Star Trek 11" followed by a subtitle as if to indicate continuity with the previous ten films. This is just something real, real different." Psion had this to say, "It's a breathless trailer, with a fast-paced editing style that made it hard to follow the action. I'm now sold on Quinto as Spock, he delivered one line, warning Kirk not to oppose him or something, and it was perfectly in character."

I'm all in! I didn't realize it was the trailer for STXI until I heard Kirk say his name. Way cool!

I wasn't thrilled with the very beginning of the trailer, I thought the kid Kirk was a little hokey. And like T'Cal, I didn't even realize I was watching the Star Trek trailer. But once they started showing the action sequences and main characters, I was really enjoying what I was seeing.

I especially liked Pegg and Quinto in the trailer. It looks like this film is going to be a great deal of fun!

Kid Kirk's annoying but I guess he won't be in it long. Looks fantastic, though I'm not mad on the new transporter effect (if that's what that is when Quinto appears - I suppose it might be Nero's transporter or something)

So, Kirk does wear gold in the movie. The quick clip where he says "Buckle up", you can see him in it.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I was happy to see that myself. From all of the stills we have seen, it looked like all he was going to wear was black.

The AMC near my house didn't play the star trek trailer along with Quantum of Solace. So I was disappointed

Well, I haven't decided yet whether or not I'm going to see the new Bond flic. I wasn't all that thrilled with Casino Royale, probably because I think it's laughable that they chose Daniel Craig, who looks older and older every time I see him, to play a young James Bond. But, Quantum does look to be a decent movie so I may give it a shot. Dunno.

At any rate, the fact that they paired this trailer up with it certainly wasn't a selling point.

But, I figured that, as somebody who's been a Trek fan since the days of the original series, I owed it to the franchise to at least see the trailer before I made any final decisions on whether or not to see it.

I said some time ago that, given Abrams wish to turn this movie into Star Wars, that it would be only a matter of time before we heard about a pre-pubescent Kirk having pod races through the cornfields of Iowa.

I guess I was a little off. Instead, we get a pre-pubescent Kirk, already quite the rebel, stealing a couple hundred year old corvette (wonder what it drove on as there's no way in heck that fossil fuels will be around when Kirk is a child) and racing it off a cliff while trying to outrun a cop.

Amazing little kid. Shifting gears like Mario Andretti, a skill that had no doubt been rendered useless about 300 years earlier. Proudly announcing himself as James Tiberius Kirk. Hmmm, not sure when Kirk because so proud of his middle name, but ok.

We see Spock's youth. Not enough there to have any real opinion either way, I guess.

We get lots of little snippets, no doubt intended to remind us that every penny of that $150m was well spent.

Then, we see the scenes that pretty much kill it for me.

We see an excange between Spock and a somewhat battered Kirk. Kirk asks Spock if he's afraid. Spock tells him he won't be lectured. Kirk challenges him and we see snippets of a fight.

Ummmm... no. Sorry, but, with the exception of when Spock was going through Pon'Far, can somebody tell me when Spock EVER talked to one of his superiors like that? When Spock ever talked to ANYBODY like that?

Even when Spock was being insubordinate, he did it in a calm, rational way. Heck, even the mirror universe Spock was totally reserved.

I realize that scenes for trailers are always taken out of context, so there's likely more to what caused that then what we saw. But, having watched these characters for 40 years, can anybody really tell me that they can forsee a situation where Spock would respond to any Starfleet officer as he did there?

Then we see Chekov. I realize that he was always borderline dorky. But, my God, that was almost to Parody level.

The tech stuff, like the transporter beam being different and the nacells being totally wrong... that was about what I expected.

I'm not entirely sure how they're going to go through the entire movie without anybody actually meeting Nero face to face, since it's been well established that they'd never actually seen a Romulan before the events i Balance of Terror.

All in all, this movie does look visually stunning. But, as I said before, for $150m and a B level cast, it had better.

Will that alone be enough to convince a public that hates all things Trek to give up their cash when there are likely to be better sci-fi choices to be had? I still doubt it.

But, from what I've seen from this trailer, this movie is a little too much Star Wars, and not enough Star Trek.

That whole article is a mess of inaccuracies and just plain invented stuff. Best taken with a very large grain of salt, which seems to good advice applied to any article in the Daily Fail.

I went back and watched the trailer several times today and I finally figured out what was bugging me about it. The first part, with the car chase, with the music and the visual style, it looks like a Mountain Dew commerical or something. Like a commerical you would see at a Star Trek movie before the actual movie starts.

Now after we get past that, it definitely grows on me. I'm still troubled by the shot of Spock knocking the snot out of Kirk (and Abrams comments about Kirk pissing off Spock) but since we don't know the context of the scene, I guess I'll withhold judgement.
