I'm also hoping that somehow that too-serious young Kirk that was mentioned in TOS will still be respected in canon. I like the notion that Kirk was not a hell-raiser or a partyer when young, and only when he started to achieve things in life did he loosen up and get that stick outta his ass.
I think a lot of people consider that unrealistic (opposed to the other way round). I thought so too until it happened to myself!

I wanted to wait but finally broke down around midnight. Damn you, YouTube!! Anyway, I have the sense that I'm going to love this movie up and down and all around the town. Just wish it wasn't so damn far away

The TNG episode "Relics" is good because it cofronts this issue head on: People can become relics, not just inanimate objects.
And evidently a fair number of fans. ("Uh oh! A girl in a BRA! Shield my eyes, Mommy!")

I saw the trailer without knowing what the hell it was until the kid gave his name. I think this is exactly the kind of hook the FRANCHISE needs to replace all the fans bolting because Ford Mustangs are still as cool in the future as they were when they were first offered. I'm looking forward to gauging the audience's reaction since the reaction here was so predictable.

Bottom line for me: Nothing I've seen is discouraging me from seeing this movie opening weekend. If anything I'm embracing the change even more.

I'm not a car guy at all but I certainly know the difference between a Corvette and a Mustang.

Elaborating on that would push this thread into TNZ realm I guess

You could distract the mods with a link to the bootlegged trailer. Perhaps a framegrab from the bootleg, split into eight parts, colours inverted, with each part posted in a different thread.

I've been wondering where the Mustang got into things, too.

That's because the Kirks bought a shape-changing Mustang during an auction at the now-defunct Knight Industries.

Just saw the trailer, and I have only three words to describe it:

WTF?

May 2009 will come too soon for me, I fear. I'll go see it - hell, I stuck through all of ENT! - but man I hope it's better than it looks, because it sure as hell didn't look like Star Trek to me.

Isnt that the point though, that it doesnt feel exactly like what has been produced over the last 10 years.

Everyone's been clamoring for new blood and to re-popularize ST, now you have IT, and people still complain. It doesn't really surprise me, except for the fact that Abrams could produce something THIS good looking and still have people complain.

Guess what, its NOT the same ST, get over it.

My only real problem with it is that people are driving motorcycles and old cars in the 23d century. Fucking ridiculous. Otherwise, seemed pretty cool. I like the look of the ship's interior, and I'm glad they used the classic uniforms.

You do realize there are aficionados and restorers of both model-ts and colonial era carriages who think YOU are fucking ridiculous.

I agree that the driving the car-off-the-cliff scene really set the wrong tone for that trailer. The trailer would have been much better without it.
You're missing the point, that scene NEEDED to be in the trailer, its the hook that catches the attention of those who otherwise would dismiss a standard scifi/Star Trek trailer out of hand.
