scfi's next EXPLOSION

We've had a run on Superhero movies in the past decade, thanks to Spiderman/Xmen..we've had a run on fantasy movies, thanks to Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter. What kind of scifi movie do you think will run the table?

I say movies that have messages wrapped in them. LOGANS RUN would be a perfect remake as baby-boomers (me) become ever absorbant of the resources of USA. What better way to get rid of that burden than inact nation wide Festivals? I could see them making a more serious remake of PLANET OF THE APES with all the mirrors of society in that movie...

There have been a few movies that have attempted to bring social commentary into their stories, but not like how they were done in the 60s and 70s. And as our world faces more interesting issues, I think controversal movies that challenge established thought could make a come back.

I would like to think so, I love love to see some harder sci-fi movies. However, I think all these sci-fi and fantasy action films we're getting is part of a larger trend towards escapism from the current world. I don't doubt a socially relevant sci-fi film could be a hit, but I doubt it will be the next big wave.

As for what the next trend will be after super heroes.....No Idea.

Time Travel. With the explosion of alt History novels and the trend towards escapism growing ever more present in the face of a recessionary climate, time travel to the past will be the next big thing. Check out Life On Mars for a preview of what's to come.....not to mention Cold Case, which delves into the past weekly...

Is that the same as Carousel?

Not just Time Travel, but the "quantum leap" concept specifically. People have it in their heads now that this is actually more possible than travelling to other solar systems. We've seen it in Lost, Heroes, Journeyman, Life on Mars, and a host of other movies/television series.

Heh sadly for them, with the exception of some characters in Heroes, there is no controlling the initiating of time travel and the "destination".

With a new 1984 and a new Brave New World movie on the way, I'm betting that the next big thing for a year or several is going to be distopias.

Well, from the current state of high-end physics theories, time travel is more possible than FTL - there are at least some internally consistent theories (albeit untestable untill we can re-engineer stars or similarly heavy space-time distorters) on how to achieve Time travel.
Though not in the way depicted onscreen, admittedly.

Re: acronimity - add the BBC's remake of Survivors to that list. Starts sometime in November.

Ooh, and I seem to remember talk of a Handmaid's Tale adaptation as well.

I think I'm on to something.

I assume you're talking about one thats different from the version that was released years ago?

Re: scfi's next EXPLOSION

I suspect that the one thing that choked the life out of a sci-fi resurgence was, ironically enough, the Star Wars prequels.

While those movies were huge financial successes, critically they were slammed by virtually everyone. In essence, they made money despite being lack luster. I'm sure that translated into "it succeeded because its Star Wars." No other film series has done that.

What it will take is for a NEW franchise to be born that inspires as much excitement and enthusiasm as Star Wars did back in 77. Lord of the Rings brought the sandals and sword epics back and Harry Potter made youthful magic interesting. Batman, X-Men and Spiderman all jumpstarted and maintained the superhero resurgence. Unfortunately though, nothing has reinvigorated the sci-fi epic.

Hmm... suddenly I'm wondering where I heard this adaptation business. I might have totally made it up.

I think that your admitting you may have made something up may be a trekbbs first.

I'd rather live in brave new world than 1984, Ford be praised

Well I think almost anybody would. Brave New World is a utopia. 1984 is a distopia.
