Smith: 'Star Trek XI' Highlight Of Trek Film Series

After seeing Star Trek XI, Kevin Smith found it to be as enjoyable as his other favorite Star Trek movie.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, Smith prefers the Star Trek movies to the televised series. "I can watch the movies again and again and again," he said "The TV is kind of sacrosanct for a lot of people, but I don't enjoy it as much as I enjoy the movies."

Star Trek XI is be the best Star Trek movie in many years, as far as Smith is concerned. "So this one I enjoyed probably the most since I've enjoyed, like, 'Wrath of Khan,'" he said.

Smith had praise for the performances of Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, as well as the rest of the crew. And the idea of a franchise reboot won a thumbs up from him. "I'm all for a reboot," he said, "because it just keeps it potentially alive longer.

I don't know ancient, I consider myself a real fan and I'm all for this film as long as it really does honor the source material. I'm expecting changes but as long as they really don't fly in the face of truly established canon, then I can live with it.

Considering that Smith saw an incomplete cut of the film, that fact that he's that impressed indicates to me that the finished product should be worth viewing.

Then again, I could end up bitching in May that this is horrible and worse than Nemesis.

Actually, I'm not certain that it's complete. I have yet to read that all the FX are in place or that they've completed the score. I think the only aspect that's done is the editing of the primary footage.

Why is it heresy to want a story to end before it totally goes to shit? Of course, that starship sailed for Trek a long time ago. At this point, I'd say the REAL fans acknowledge that Trek has been dead for ages and Paramount has just been giving us variations on Weekend at Bernie's.

WaB is an awesome movie, though I can't eat for several hours afterwards.

Anyway, Trek has, like many shows that fans apparently only like a little of, still been profitable and entertaining to some folks in all its forms. So why not make more?

Objectively, that's a good argument. But I'm hardly objective. As a fan, it bugs me to see Star Trek diluted with so much substandard product and, so far, Trek XI looks like more of the same to me. Believe, if I'm wrong, you will see me do a big ol' mea culpa right here.

I don't know exactly what to expect from Abrams, since my only exposure to his stuff was seeing maybe the last 10 minutes of one of the MI movies on TV once. The one with the tunnel helicopter explosion.

I doubt we're getting "The Trouble with Tribbles" though. I mean, for a lot of people that is the defining episode of the series. It's one of those episodes (there were a bunch of them) that ends in a sort of bizarre 'bridge komedy' routine. I bet Abrams sat down with his list of popular TOS episodes and the first one on the list has Kirk getting buried in little hairy balls.

Hoo-Boy.

Abrams is more of a TWOK fan, so I imagine his movie will be more in that tone: Big villains, lots of character history getting dredged up, space battles galore, maybe some minor message in the same vein as the age/revenge thing.

I think DePalma directed the one with the tunnel explosion. Abrams wasn't a gleam in Tom Cruise's eye at that point, iirc. I think he may have been working on Felicity, which was one of the bigger teen soaps (along with Dawson's Creek and maybe even Buffy the Vampire Slayer) during that strange teen soap period post-90210 and pre-Gossip Girl.

But yeah, a film in the vein of "Tribbles" would blow--indeed, we got just that in 1986 with TVH and blow it did. (Hmmm, "blow," "whales," "thar she blows": must be a joke in there somewhere...)

I don't think I'd categorize Buffy as a soap. I suppose on one level it has some of that sensibility, but I just don't think of it that way.

It was pretty ingenious, how it straddled categories so that it attracted genre fans of both sexes who wouldn't otherwise watch a soap as well as young women who wouldn't otherwise watch a genre show.
