The Earth Outpost Shield in BoT and Defiant's Ablative Armor

Roughly same "thing"? Spock had a piece in the meeting room and it was a physical piece of metal [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][SIZE=2](Cast rodinium)

When the Romulans hit it w/the plasma torpedo, did it turn to metal?
