I totally believe that Abrams wanted Shatner in the movie. He just didn't want it very badly. So it wasn't too hard for him to let the idea go when it didn't work out right away.

And it's probably for the best that the idea died early. It really sounded like Shatner wanted a fairly large role in the film, or for the movie to be about him. And I think it unlikely that that was ever going to happen.

At best, Abrams would probably only have come up with a very well written cameo, which likely would have disappointed Shatner to the point where negotiations would have broken down.

I love Shatner. And I'm an Abrams fan, for the most part. This just wasn't meant to be.

Unless, of course, Shatner is secretly in it!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they would've needed to completely rewrite the entire script to satisfy the SHAT's ego.
