Boston Legal 05x04 -- "True Love"

"True Love" - Alan Shore is called upon by ex-flame Phoebe Prentice (Ally Walker, "Profiler," "Tell Me You Love Me") to prove her husband's innocence in the murder of a nurse. But deep down, Alan's unrequited love for Phoebe makes him hope that her husband is guilty so that they can rekindle their relationship. Brenda Strong ("Desperate Housewives") guest stars as presiding Judge Judy Beacon, on "Boston Legal," MONDAY, OCTOBER 13 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Guest starring are Brenda Strong as Judge Judy Beacon, Ally Walker as Phoebe Prentice, Kyle Secor as Dr. Robert Brooks, Peter Onorati as A.D.A. Stewart Betts, Caroline Aaron as Phyllis Goulet and Michael Eric Strickland as Dr. Sylvan Turrette.
I wondered if Ally Walker would make another appearance this season.

Re: Boston Legal 05x04 -- "True Love"

I just started watching this show recently, and I caught tonight's episode. I didn't know of Alan's back history but figured out the mess really quickly. I have always loved James Spader's acting and I think he really hit it out of the ballpark on this one. Plus the plot was so twisted, I was mouth-agape for the entire last 10 minutes.

Also, kudos to this show -- mixing in the hilarity of Shat's vibrating crotch with the heavy drama! Do they always juxtapose this successfully?

Not always, but often! It's a shame you're just picking it up in the final season - I highly recommend going back and watching from the beginning if you have the opportunity, definitely worth the time!

As for tonight's ep, Excellent from me - I really didn't see the final twist coming and was utterly slack-jawed at the end.

Most of the time, yes.

Shatner's vibrating crotch was great, especially in court. And I really didn't see that ending coming. Alan Shore rarely gets suckered — as the prosecutor said in his closing argument, it's usually Alan who does the suckering — so this was really a slam-bang episode. One of the best they've done in ages.

I think it also helped that the story was so focused. It was literally Alan, Denny, Phoebe, Bob, and whoever else was needed in court to fill out the case. No exasperated eye-rolling from Carl and Shirley, none of Jerry's mouth-popping antics (as much as I enjoy them). You really could just do a series with Alan and Denny and as long as it was as well-written as tonight's episode, and starred Spader and Shatner, it would be fantastic.

Sadly, yes. And only a half-season (13 episodes, as opposed to their usual 22-24 episode orders). But the show's been really solid this year, so if they can hit it out of the ballpark like this nine more times, I'll be satisfied.

I WOULD WATCH IT. Tonight I had the same thought as you did, actually. Maybe it's not too late to petition for a spinoff?

I finally get into this show and I don't even get to enjoy a whole season. Just my luck-- I either get into shows after they are cancelled, or THIS happens. *sulk*

Re: Boston Legal 05x04 -- "True Love"

This season has been a lot better than last season.

My only complaint is they got rid of the cross dresser (they never used him last year) and there are too few people around the office. Hell today we were never even in the office until the last few minutes.

Crazy episode, I just wish they were more like The Practice and have some trials and such that last several episodes, or at least two.

And I like how people think that there should be just a Alan and Denny show, what have I been watching for years? This is the Alan and Denny and tonights episode was a great example of that. This whole show is about Alan and Denny, all the other characters come and go but they are the two main ones. They are the characters that were spun off from The Practice's last season, that was really just Boston's Legal's first season.

Good episode tonight--I'm glad to see Denny and Alan getting the lion's share of scenes so far this season.

I was present at the filming of a couple of scenes from last year's season finale, and really enjoyed getting to see Shatner and Spader at work: Spader was trying variations of lines right up until filming, and Shatner was simply reading the newspaper... and then they both got right up and knocked their scenes out of the park. I'll really miss this show when it's over, but what a ride it has been!

^I would love to hear more Spader/Shatner tales, those two make a great duo.

I would think a huge trial would be great way to end the show spanning over the final 3 episodes.

So, the wife sez to me, early in the episode, "I'll bet Alan's old girlfriend is the real killer," and I sez, "I don't think so, love. That's too easy."

Never send a woman to do a man's job.

I thought so early, when she was so forgiving of him, then knew it when she (Phoebe) turned on her husband.

BTW, this is an old "LA LAW" plot (and undoubtedly other show before that)--but there I think it was two parents who killed their kid. They created sufficient reasonable doubt for each by blaming the other. The tell was that, as they left in the elevator seemingly still blaming each other even after this possibility was raised, they reached out and held hands just as the elevator doors closed.

Same "reaching out and holding hands" to show collusion.

I knew there was something familiar about it.

Well, this one was written entirely by David E. Kelley. Hence the up in quality, and the occasional familiarity with past story elements.
