But I'm all for big epic space battles, just don't want to see a giant starship moving around like a fly since Abrams did want this to be realistic...

Same here. I have to admit the Star Wars reference bothers me just a bit, but as I've said all along, I'm willing to withhold judgement on this until we see the whole thing unveiled (or at least until I see the trailer!)

Up to this point, everything I've read, and what little we've seen, has been encouraging.

Live I've said before, given that this thing seems to take place in about a dozen different time periods, it's only a matter of time before we hear about a pre-adolescent Kirk winning pod races through the cornfields of Iowa.

And, we'll finally learn that Kobayashi Maru was really a kangaroo looking alien with a big tongue.

Uh oh.

*Ducks before the rabid old school fans come through and stampede the place*
I'm going to take that to mean this movie needs more "action" battle scenes than previous Trek (think E-E slowly.....moving.....closer.....to.....Scmitar(?-Shinzon's ship)....to.....crash.....into.....it.....zzzzzzzz zzzzz
I think that from the context, it's pretty clear that what they mean is that they want to bring a sense of the Enterprise as a space vessel rather than as very, very comfortable, seemingly-stationary place, to the film. They want to create a feeling of the ship as a ship, not a sense of the ship as a hotel. They want to make it feel less comfortable.

Saying it's more like Star Wars makes me feel less comfortable.

Re: Kurtzman And Orci Drop New 'Star Trek XI' Hints

I think their strategy is brilliant. I mean, earlier this decade, J. Michael Straczinski (of Babylon 5 fame) proposed pretty much exactly what this movie ended up being, only he suggested making a series on that premise.

I mean, the very controversy generated among fans and non-fans by the choice of actors to play people in the new film, the "canon"/non-"canon" decisions made, etc. etc. are getting so many people interested in the film that all of us long-time fans of Trek might be lucky enough to have at least some new Star Trek coming to us regularly again.

I mean, I'd be happy to see any Trek, but a return to KIRK? Really now, I think most of the arguments and quibbles about XI are moot next to the fact that we've finally got Trek back.

I'm sorry but this longtime fan doesn't feel lucky enough to get some sort of Trek again, and I don't like to be told that I should be lucky or grateful.. Certainly not with comments from these two morons saying that Trek needs to be more like Star Wars.
That is BS.
If I want Star Wars, I'll watch Star Wars.
It's almost if these people are trying to tell Star Trek fans that Star Wars is superior.

Sooner or later, some people are going to have to face the fact that the only place that controversy exists is right here in these forums.

To the non-fan out on the street? There is no controversy because they really don't give a darn.

The moment the words "Star Trek" roll across that screen, they're going to roll their eyes and zone out.

Putting J.J. Abrams' name on it isn't likely to change that.

If Abrams wants to head Star Trek. He needs to start acting a little less like George Lucas and a little more like Gene Roddenberry.

I had little incentive to go see Clone Wars, and I now have even LESS incentive to see this. But then, I was never going to begin with.

It takes more than naming a bunch of characters Kirk, Spock and McCoy and throwing them on a ship named Enterprise to make it Star Trek.

I'll stick with Phase II. It may be a recast, but at least it's a respectful one.

Agreed.

And as for making it "Less comfortable" - "More ship like" and such.
Enterprise attempted this. These aren't military vessels. They are ships of
exploration that happen to serve the military needs when/if they arise.

We can't forget that when consider how the ships of Trek operate and
why. It ISN'T Star Wars, and ISN'T BSG, this is how it is different and
that shouldn't change to make it more "Exciting".

I have faith in Abrams and his guys. But they need to be careful
in some regards. Again... I do think they are.

Basically, I have faith in Team Abrams too (especially after watching a few eps of Fringe) but this sudden comparison to SW makes me wonder just what exactly they meant by that.

I want ST, not SW.

I think people are not understanding what they meant by "more star wars like".

Oh, that's convenient, they're covering a story that's never been covered before instead of dealing with canon.

Less nerdy and less technobabble. More explosions and exotic locations/aliens. More hero-centric.
