Will There Ever Be An ENT Companion?

It's a shame Enterprise is the only modern trek series not to see the publication of an official Companion volume. I'd love to have an official guide to the series, and if they are honest in their analysis it could make for some good reading. Maybe the fact there are fewer seasons makes this entry less worthwhile for the publishers/studio.

Re: Will There Ever Be An ENT Companion?

I read in TrekMovie's review of Star Trek 101 that it can stand in as a sort of companion while we wait for TPTB to come around and do a proper one: http://trekmovie.com/2008/09/16/libr...star-trek-101/

There are several things about Star Trek 101 that give it value for serious fans. First, thank you to Pocket Books for FINALLY giving fans of Enterprise some kind of episode guide. While I will not stop in my tireless, although probably futile, endeavor to get Pocket Books to publish a proper companion to Enterprise (um, Pocket Books, even the Dukes of Hazzard has a companion book released 20 years after the show was canceled), at least Archer’s trek gets some respect here.

I just recently purchased the Firefly ones, and pine for ENT to get one out!

Ditto I want to see Enterprise getting it's own companion. All the the cast interviews, writers the behind the scenes stuff like Ds9 companion had.

Re: Will There Ever Be An ENT Companion?

I heard from somebody (sorry, don't remeber who) over at StarTrekBooks.com that there won't be one because there's no market for it. This was three years ago, right after the show ended, so maybe things have changed.

Maybe we should all write to Pocket books and ask them to produce one. Or start and online petition.

I really miss Trek nonfiction books of any kind, actually. I miss the Companions, Tech Guides, and Encyclopedias.
ENT needs its own companion, for sure. And the Trek Encyclopedia needs an update. The latest edition is from 1999!

hopefully if Trek XI does well we will see renewed interest in all things Trek and maybe get a few reference books like an Ent guide.

Re: Will There Ever Be An ENT Companion?

From the Trek Lit FAQ...

Q. Where are my nonfiction books?
A. Nonfiction sales have been abysmally down for Pocket's Star Trek books recently; their last big effort, Star Charts, apparently sold very poorly despite being the coolest book ever. There have been a few books recently-- Fall/Winter 2006 saw the release of two projects, Voyages of Imagination: The Star Trek Fiction Companion (a guide to the prose fiction) and Ships of the Line (a collection of pretty starship pictures). A couple guides are slated for 2008 as well: Captain Kirk's Guide to Women and Star Trek 101.

There has been no word on any new editions of the Encyclopedia or Chronology or an Enterprise Companion. I don't care if you and all your friends would buy them, the books won't sell well enough. (Do you seriously think Pocket would not publish them if they could make good money?)

So there's no market for a companion for a Star Trek series, but enough market to publish two volumes for Firefly? ha

Not a slam on Firefly, I'm a Browncoat through and through. But "ha".

The licensing fee on a ST book is higher.

ENT's audience was a tiny fraction of TNG and TOS.

I assume the "Firefly Episode Guide: An Unofficial, Independent Guide to Joss Whedon's Firefly" is from a small publisher with few overheads. We know they paid no license fee.

Just because a book is about Star Trek doesn't necessarily mean it has to be licensed. I have a whole slew of unoffcial non-fiction Trek books not authorized by Paramount such as the Guide to New Trek, and all of the Nitpickers books... I could go on.

The issue is marketabliity. Even an independent needs to see a light at the end of the tunnel and apparently someone did with Firefly.
