Tagging your favorite show(?)

I was just looking at the Tag Cloud on the Trek BBS homepage. One thing that struck me is how small the Battlestar Galactica tag is compared to, for example, the Babylon 5 one (I think B5's a great show so it's not about comparing the two)

When I took a closer look, I noticed that, in fact, I am the only person who seems to using this feature in the BSG sub forum.

This makes me wonder: Is there a reason they're not being used here? Are people not aware of them? Do people not like them? Do people think it doesn't make sense add tags such as "bsg" or "battlestar galactica" here?

Having worked with SharePoint a lot, I'm a big fan of tags myself. I think they make it a lot easier to find the information you're looking for. In addition, since there's a tag cloud in use on the Trek BBS, they're also a means of indicating how popular a given subject is at a given time. On a certain level, that's also a way of promoting a topic you're interested in.
For example, somebody straying onto the site first might become aware that BSG is a topic by looking at the Tag Cloud IF that particular is noticeable.

So, personally, I think it would be great if people added tags such as "bsg" and/or "battlestar galactica" to their posts. However, I'm also very interested to find out if people here agree with me or not.

So, Yay or Nay to using tags such as "battlestar galactica" for new posts here?

I think that the use of a specific tag by different people probably has more of an effect on the visibility of said tag. It's possible that the activity in a thread using said tag affects it as well, although the recent admiral wars probably would have sent those tags to stratospheric heights. Since I don't recall those tags ever getting THAT large, thread activity may not have as much influence.

I don't bother with the tag function, unless I want to make sarcastic comments. It just doesn't seem that useful to me.

Nobody's using the tag function, but just for giggles I've started tagging SUPERHEROES for every thread that merits it. Just to see how big I could get it, but frankly now I'm bored of this game.

Would it be kosher to tag a thread "FRAK" if someone - say, me - posted a message that contains "frak" or derivations thereof?

Because it would be frakkin hilarious for there to be a huge "FRAK" in the tag cloud.

Hey we have to do something waiting for the new eps.

This game would be even funner if we did it honestly - look for other people to say "frak."

I doubt that the use of the tag in the thread itself is of importance. I'd find that somewhat surprising.
I think what's simply relevant is how many threads use a given tag. That's seems to be the way it worked with the "battlestar galactica" tag I used, anyway.

And this very, very cool idea Temis had seems to support that:

I was WONDERING why that tag was so big, but that explains it all .

You know what? I'll use "FRAK" in all my threads concerning BSG from now on. I invite everyone to join in since I think it's a terrific idea, Temis .

It's probably more useful in other contexts (e.g. enterprise document management) but I think it can be pretty useful here to IF it's used by everyone and used properly.
I think the Tag Cloud is a very interesting feature, among other things, that's fueled solely by tagging, obviously.

Honestly or not, I've just made it happen. Silliest function I've ever encountered, but it has helped me avoid writing most of a paper for a good hour or two.

Great job, fast work. The funniest part will be waiting to see if anyone even notices.

I'll stop with the superheroes tagging tho. Wonder how long it will take to deflate?

The tag function is there to make it easier to for someone to find threads about a topic.

BSG has its own forum, so it would be silly to tag threads "BSG" or "Battlestar Galactica" because they are all in one spot already.

I had that thought as well. That's definitely one reason against. If the Tag Cloud were more prominent (i.e. at the top of the page) I think it would be slightly different since it would be the first thing new people would see.

I don't see it

Interesting. It's popped up again the the Tag Cloud. What I didn't know (and what I just realized looking at the tags in this thread) is that users can add tags to threads created by other people.

That's essentially what I was saying. By "use" I mean adding the tag to the list of tags for a given thread, not placing the text in the body of a post of that thread.

While that's very true, there are occasions when the subject legitimately comes up in another forum. For example, discussing the Emmy Awards in GTVM could very easily involve BSG.

However, the point is well taken. Use of the tags does need to be legitimate. Doesn't really bother me, and I did get a chuckle out of Temis' "frakkin'" idea. Just use common sense, so we don't lose the tag functionality altogether.
