How did Khan get the Reliant?

Star Trek 2 is still one of my favorite movies for what it is, but Ive always wished they would shown Kahn and his Gang actually take over the Reliant and Maroon the crew on Ceti Alpha. Ive always wondered how Kahn was able to overpower a crew of at least 200 with a handful of guys. I would guess that the Reliant had a skeleton crew aboard do to the nature of their mission. but it still would have been cool to see. also would have loved to see him torture the scientists on Regula one, it would have made hime more "evil" and shown his madness more I think. but I can also see why they left it out, some things are better left unseen.

Question: is the size of the Reliant's crew established?

Anyway, he did pretty effectively manage to take over the Enterprise, with a 400-person crew, with a similar-sized handful of guys and the aid of one extremely stupid lieutenant. Here he's got the captain and first officer brain-controlled. He could order much of the crew down to Ceti Alpha just on the grounds they were conducting a massive rescue mission, for a start (that's one way to get the comically ineffective people passed off as security out of the way) and gas the rest.

Maybe it would have been worth seeing him taking over the Reliant, as a way of building up Khan's menace and building tension at a point when the movie is still pretty laid back. Extra torture scenes, though, would be redundant to the brain-taking of Terrel and Chekov, and showing the torture of Regula One scientists would undercut the `dead cat scare' when Our Heroes discover the bodies, and the sense of shock when we understand what was done to them.

He asked the mind-controlled captain and first officer to activate the intruder control gas system?

Maybe it's something we'll see when they finally get around to remaking this movie. Along with Kirk riding around in a dune buggy picking them all up in a post end-credits montage.

Personally, I like how we don't get to see every event up on screen.

Re: How did Kahn get the Reliant?

In the novelization, it's said that Khan used Ceti eels on the Reliant's engineering crew, but (somehow) got all the rest of the personnel down to Ceti Alpha V. It didn't say how he did that, other than a brief bit with a controlled Chekov talking to Mr. Beach over the comm.

The novelization also suggests that the Reliant's compliment was 300, and that Khan killed some to make his point.

...And then the L.A.Graf novel "War Dragons" further goes to claim that all the Reliant crew died before Kirk could get to them. Personally, I don't much appreciate the novel extrapolations on any of the movies, except perhaps some stuff added to ST5 in the novelization.

Re: How did Kahn get the Reliant?

There are some details that compliment the films well, or do certain things better. I've always preferred how the novelization of TUC has the assassins disabling the universal translator, and that's why Uhura has to break out the books to communicate with the Klingons. None of that "the UT will be recognized" stuff.

What, they couldn't find those cargo pods? Did Khan beam them to the far side of the planet? OR did they trample each other getting inside?

Maybe they should've been left there to seek their revenge in a sequel. WRATH OF RELIANT [Crew]

I'm rather pleased that they didn't feel the need to spell everything out for us. It's a good question, but we can all easily come up with plausible answers.

Re: How did Kahn get the Reliant?

My theory is that with Terell and Chekov were under Khan's control. Maybe they beamed up under the guise that they were rescued survivors of a crashed ship or doomed expedition.

Back on the bridge, the captain makes some subtle orders to make the ship easier to overtake. Beam down salvage teams, etc. Khan's followers, seemingly innocent survivors, are allowed to wander around the ship, and take up key positions.

Khan gives the order, and the ship is theirs before the crew knows what hit 'em. He threatens to kill crew members if they don't beam down to the planet, and makes a few examples to show he means it.

The crew beams down, Khan takes over, and away they go.

See, that would have been a cool additional ten minute scene.

Re: How did Kahn get the Reliant?

In a STARLOG interview with Mike Minor when TWOK came out, he said that some of the bridge stations were made out of balsa and paper so they could be blown up when Khan forcibly took control of RELIANT. When you look at the movie, you can see the stations he is referring to (basically little boxes on the upper deck) but they get blown up later in the film. So maybe there was some plan to do it one way and they did it another, or there were even more of these paper/balsa things (maybe around damage control?) that were blown up for a sequence we never saw.

We know that the bridge pyro on the Enterprise bridge set didn't turn out the first time, and that it cost a lot to restage that one (right after 'hold on.') So maybe some of these balsa things blew up badly.

That sounds plausible. Only I would expect that Captain Terrell did not take a very active role here. The Ceti eels made them persuadable, but not much to a face-face encounter (rather weak). IMO, Terrell and Chekov got them back aboard, and Khan took care of the rest...

...with "Space Seed" and Khan's takeover of the Enterprise as the example. Just updated for the new ship and smaller crew.
