Supernatural 4x3 "In the Beginning" SPOILERS and discussion

Well, I'm going to tivo the debate. I already know who I'm voting for and I don't need to hear Sarah stammer any more than she already has. Advance reviews of this episode are terrific, saying it'll turn the whole saga on its ear. Works for me. The Dean and Samgirl warring camp factions are all being premenstrual and crazy, so it must be good. Mitch Pileggi plays the boys maternal grandfather, Samuel Campbell.

I can't wait for this tonight. I am a Samguy, but if the episodes good, could care less that Jared is only in 1 minute or so of it.

Can't wait to see how well the tie everything together and the twist at the end.

I do wish that Frederic Lane was in it though (I don't think he is). He was awesome.

Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God, OH. MY. GOD.....my guts are in knots already. Frederic Lehne couldn't be in it. Yellow eyes wasn't in that body until John was in the hospital after the wreck. He possessed a janitor.

So it's all Dean's fault.

Oh, I know why he couldn't but I miss the creepy bastard.

And something tells me that Sam and him are seriously needing to have words...and on both their parts.

Re: Supernatural 4x3 "In the Beginning" SPOILERS and discussion

No, it's not Dean's fault. It's a causality loop. It's what had to be. The angels needed Dean Winchester to fight those who want to release Lucifer. This was the only way he was going to be the hunter he needed to be. Oh my God, this is so unbearably sad.

Like Castiel said, all roads lead to the same destination. It would have happened anyway. Dean needed the information. Castiel is one cruel son of a bitch. I need to think about this for awhile and absorb it. Wow.

I loved Dean's comments about Mary.

That was a fantastic line.

Oh but Mary.....she broke my heart. Mary Campbell, you were the coolest hunter chick ever to walk the earth in the 70s.. It struck me how very, very alike Mary and Dean are. Mary made the deal without thinking of the consequences, then when she didn't see the demon for years, maybe she thought she imagined it. Dean did just disappear. Memory plays with you. It all makes absolutely perfect sense. Mary is so much like Dean in that way. So loving and emotional and strong. Who ever cast Amy Gumenick as a young Mary did a superb job. Superb beyond belief. I can't believe they got such a "blah" actress for Ruby's new meatsuit when they can cast female guest stars like this.

Did Mitch Pileggi study a tape of Jared Padalecki's facial expressions? It sure seemed like it to me. Damn, Dean's gonna be PISSED OFF at darling Sammy. Me loves fireworks.

Re: Supernatural 4x3 "In the Beginning" SPOILERS and discussion

I am more than likely in the minority on this one, but I think Castiel's strategy was appropriate. Dean needs to be given info on Sam's psychic stuff in a certain way, and this was a good way to do that while avoiding confrontation/arguing (so far) between Castiel/Dean. Also, Dean got to learn lots about his family history and lots of that info comes in handy.

Pileggi ftw

Re: Supernatural 4x3 "In the Beginning" SPOILERS and discussion

That was FUCKING AWESOME.............

I loved it, I absolutely loved it. One of the greatest episodes that Supernatural has produced.

Often shows with a large mythology (BSG, X-Files, DS9, Lost, Babylon 5) have episodes that tie together past threads and then open themselves to new aspects. But I don't think I have seen a show that did it so well, with nothing feeling forced or out of place.

I mean I love Supernatural, but in many ways I was more impressed with tonight's plot and setup then any other episode.

Acting, Now normally SN has two strong leads, a good guest star and then some questionable ones. Across the board strong to great performances.
Not only was this plot and mythos heavy, it had a tremendous emotional core.

We see that Castiel shares the same habit as YED in proving their point. To get Sam to believe him, YED lets him see the past. Castiel manages to bring Dean to the past to witness.

Even the humor of this episode was muted and appropriate, always in character and fitting the situation.

What is interesting is that while I always assumed that Ruby as a sinister agenda, I never really thought it was machinations that YED might have set in motion himself.

Dean's reactions to his father, to his mother, to the description of a demon with Yellow eyes were spot on.

Dean banter with YED was awesome. THe taunting. Dean confidence in killing him, YED cocky attitude that this man certainly couldn't do it, plays so well into his actions towards Dean later in their confrontations both in the cabin and in the graveyard.

Some might not by Dean's change from 2nd season What Is and What SHould never be where he is willing to give up this nice safe life to save others, but to me it makes perfect sense.

Family has always been supremely important to Dean, and in What IS he still had the most important part of his family.

But after that episode what happened, Dean got to leave his absolute worst fear the death of his brother.

For Dean to be able not only to save his mom, but his Dad, and have a future where his family is safe, where Sam never would be killed. Yeah, he could live with it.

And let me tell you, I can't wait for next episode...Dean is going to be pissed, I mean sooooo pissed.

I loved absolutely loved the look Dean gave Castiel when Castiel (in his manner) basically said will take Sam out.

And I just want to point out this is the third episode, and we haven't had a bad episode, haven't even had an average episode or just a good episode. Everything so far as been very good to great.

I love this season.
